Massive traffic jam on I-15 Primm, NV
nvroads.com ^ | 5/31/2021 | self

I live in Vegas and I've been watching a live traffic cam showing the traffic near Primm, NV , which is at the NV/CA state line on I-15.

It's been going on since 10:00AM this morning, and it's been 5mph, bumper to bumper all day and is continuing into the night. I've never seen anything like it. It's mostly Californians returning home after spending the holiday weekend here. Here's the website. Type "Primm" in the "find" box and then click the blue box in the upper right corner to expand the picture.

Drive time from Vegas to L.A. is normally 4-4/12 hours. Right now it's over 8 hrs.

Oh, that’s awful! When I used to live in Ventura county, I drove to Vegas several weekends a year. I knew to leave Vegas early Sunday morning to beat the rush of LA-bound traffic!

“Not many, 100 ain’t that hot”

Northeastern types start dropping dead a bit over 85°.
80 in England.

They’ve shut down the 15 near the Cajon Pass, it’s massive DUI check point.

Sundays returning to CA from LV, NV are
always bad. National holidays move it
to Monday and extra traffic. The same trip
south on a Saturday night is painless.

My daughter and I drove out to CA many years back.

We were going to stay in Vegas but the hotel accommodations were such a ****show that we canceled them and drove on to Barstow.

While driving that highway just about sunset, the traffic coming in the other direction, TO Vegas was like a two lane parking lot for two hours worth of driving.

We could not believe it. Could not fathom that that many people in the middle of nowhere were going there and where they were all going to fit.

Anyone with an ounce of sense would know to stay in Vegas until Tuesday and then cruise home on a nearly empty interstate. Monday night hotel rates would have been low.

I was thoroughly traumatized on Jan 2nd, 1983. I still remember the date. The worst possible day, I could have ever picked, to return from Berchtesgaden, Germany, to Wiesbaden. A normal 4 hour trip, took 16 hours. Never again, did I ever drive my car down to the ski ⛷ slopes. It was miserable. 👎

I have a question.
This has bothered me for decades.
Why do they damn near shut down a freeway during high traffic time to pull a car out of a ditch?
You can get the passengers out and to a medical facility for treatment, and leave the wreck until traffic thins out.
So, why block the road at peak traffic times?

I took my son back to college the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

It was an hour and forty-five minute drive on the Thruway (NY), and we left early enough to beat the crowd. We got unexpectedly delayed and got a later start than I wanted heading back. On the way back, a forecasted winter event, icy granular rain/snow/sleet mix, started falling.

The thruway quickly became a two lane parking lot. I saw ahead of me brake lights that stretched further than I wanted to see and by the grace of God it happened just BEFORE an exit. I whipped the steering wheel to the right and got off and went home by the back roads, which were not much better but they were moving at least.

It took us FIVE hours to make that trip and that was late afternoon. We had friends coming home from out of town and they were on the Thruway at 10 PM and reported the same thing.

I vowed then to NEVER travel on a holiday weekend if I didn’t absolutely have to again. And if we do, we leave as early as possible and watch google maps very carefully.

Can you imagine if there was some kind of attack on a big city and people tried to evacuate. It would break down almost instantly.

Yes, I have thought about that scenario, many times.

Which is why we live where we do.

And you likewise, I’m sure.

I was in Vegas Friday to Tuesday morning. I knew better than to try and leave Monday.
