Creedence Clearwater Revival included their cover of "Cotton Fields" as the third track on their 1969 album Willy and the Poor Boys. Their version hit No. 1 in Mexico in 1970.

Rose Marie sang it on the Dick Van Dyke show. Did a real fine job. First time I heard the song.
The Willey and the poor boys cover of the Lead Belly tune from 1940 was just another of the great tunes they did. I still have it all on original vinyl. I was probably 14 or 15 when I bought it.
What brings it to mind for you now?
Anyway, the first time I heard this song was there. In the evenings they would have a singing group called "The Wagonmasters" who sang folk and old pioneer-type songs and this was one of them. At my insistence my dad bought two of their albums and over the years we wore them out.

We from Detroit could drive down to Cedar Point in Ohio (on Lake Erie), once me and a friend found a fence to jump and we were in the back stage area of the indian ambush of the train ride and the outlaw ambush of the stage coach.
We were standing right next to the badguys firing at the screaming kids. It was a ball.

I have always wondered how one could be “down in Louidiana just about a mile from Texarkana,” which is like being down in California just about a mile from Las Vegas. But it’s a Leadbelly song, and some of his tunes such as “The Gray Goose” and “The Titanic” feature similar absurdities.
The Beach Boys do a good cover of this as well.
Funny you mention the distance. I don’t know how far Taxarkana is from the Louisiana border, but I did interact with some folks years ago in the Ozarks who were prone to say things like it’s ‘just down the road a piece’, giving the impression of a mile or so, and when I checked it it was closer to 20 miles. I guess as a northerner that was the piece part of it I didn’t quiet understand.
CCR songs have aged very well.
Those who give such directions will often add, "and you can't miss it."
They sure do. It’s a gem. The ‘Boys made some of their best music in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, after the surf era was long past. The “Holland” album is a classic.
Like them he had built his own pine box that he slept in. He figured if he didn't wake some day they could just nail it shut and bury him without fuss.
