China's new three-child policy sends baby and maternity stocks soaring

China's decision to allow families to have three children could produce a windfall for makers of strollers, car seats and baby formula. At least, that's what investors think.

Stocks tied to baby products and maternity services soared in mainland China and Hong Kong on Monday after the Chinese government announced a major change to its family planning policy as the country tries to avert a demographic crisis.

The Chinese Communist Party's top leadership made the decision to permit couples to have up to three children at a meeting Monday, though state media reports did not say when the policy change would be implemented. It comes just three weeks after Beijing published its 2020 census, which showed China's population was growing at its slowest rate in decades. That's putting major pressure on an economy that relies on a young workforce to support an aging population and keep up high levels of growth

The planners figured out they will need more soldiers when the current stock is depleted as they try to take Taiwan ....

Not too long ago, China “allowed” two children - and yet China’s total population has already started to fall.

The great irony is 45 years ago they used propaganda, coercion and brutality to stop women from having children, but so far, there’s no way to use propaganda, coercion and brutality to to force women to have children. Maybe they are working on it....

More soldiers, but also settlers for new lands wherever the soldiers are finished.

The median age in China is 38.4 years versus 38.5 years in the US. China's fertility rate is 1.6 children born/woman (2021 est.), well below replacement level of 2.1.

Singapore tried this. They’ve probably given up by now.

They used to offer discount “singles” cruises to local resorts like Phuket in Thailand, but the “singles” wanted cruises to Hong Kong, which they got.

I heard a story, possibly apocryphal, that after all those cruises there was only one marriage — one of the “singles” married one of the cruise ship employees.

and yet China’s total population has already started to fall.

Based on CIA Factbook, China is still growing in population. 0.26% (2021 est.) growth in 2021. This equates to 36 million more people in 2021.

I wonder what the women in the one-child policy era are thinking since they were forced to get abortions.

Indeed. And I wonder if the one-child policy is ever going to happen in billion-plus-people India. After all, they've long been mimicking China's aborting of girl fetuses.

They need more young people, just like we do. They are in more desperate need for young people than we are. They have a reverse pyramid birth rate, like we do. The difference is that no one migrates to China. More & more of their population wants to go to the West & stay there once educated.

China has a population of 1.4 billion. We have 332 million people, the third most populous nation on earth. We have added 51 million people since 2000. We don’t have a shortage of young people.

I truly wonder how many of the foreign-born Chinese that are here in the U.S. are:

* trained spies
* students and scientists who are coerced into being spies due to threats from their government against family still in China
* people who want nothing to do with the CCP

Well good luck with that. Its insanely expensive to raise kids in China (with the cost well exceeding America’s exorbitant cost to do so). If you compare household income to the amount of money needed to raise kids its well and truly nuts.

If you soak young families and over regulate them because they are a captive audience that is well behaved (because they are trying to make things stable so they can raise kids), you can expect them to stop having babies.

Because China only values baby boys. Baby girls are aborted before birth, or left to die / murdered after birth so they don't "count" against a family's "allowed" number of children.

Its too late. After 40 years of the one child policy, they already have a very rapidly aging population. By mid century they will have a crashing population. It doesn’t really help a woman of 40 if you tell her that OK, she is now allowed to have more than 1 kid. She’ll be lucky to have even one.

I know many Chinese who had more than one child, or had brothers and sisters. All it took was a little cash bribe to the local CCP apparatus.

China has a looming demographic crisis as aging Chinese exit the work force and have to be supported (Solent green anyone) and an imbalance of about 60 million young men have no hope of finding a Chinese wife.
