Instead of cannabis plants they found a bank of about 100 computer units.

The force said the cryptocurrency "mine" had effectively stolen thousands of pounds of electricity.

Detectives said they were tipped off about lots of people visiting the unit throughout the day and a police drone picked up a lot of heat coming from the building.

Sgt Jennifer Griffin said, given the signs, they had expected to find a cannabis farm.

In for a penny, in for a pound?

It may not have been running so hot if they kept the fans clean.

How low a temperature differential to avoid the heat signature? Asking for a friend.

Yes. The electricity will be in the form of diesel fuel, and you will need a portable generator to extract it.

Some guys bought an old electric generating dam in Scotland or somewhere like that. It wasn’t being used anymore so they got it cheap. They turned it on and ran it to power bitcoin mining. At least they didn’t steal it.

Cool, that sounds like an awesome technology.

I have heard that you can do the same with room temperature liquid organic hydrogen carriers.

“used Tesla battery?

On a semi-related note, people use Nissan Leaf batteries to make some pretty cool electric go karts.

With articles like this one it's no surprise that people have started to steal electricity to mine for Bitcoin.

I’m not sure. New they are pretty expensive, but I think there is a salvage market for the whole batteries as well as the individual cells.

Bitcoin mining causes a lot of heat. It’s not dirt on the fans. One of the reasons a lot of the mining facilities are up in the hills is not only hydro electricity—it’s so they can just open the vents of the building in the winters and not have to pay for A/C.

Well I was working from memory so I got a few facts wrong. It was in B.C. Canada not Scotland. And the dam was built to power an old paper mill that went out of business years ago.
