Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host 135,000 racing fans for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday and the sold-out crowd will represent a big step forward as North American sports continue to turn the page on the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We've hit our capacity for this year's Indianapolis 500 and look forward to hosting 135,000 fans at the world's largest sporting event since the pandemic began," race organizers said on Thursday.
"We're thrilled to welcome fans 'Back Home Again' and appreciate our loyal customers and their continued support."
The 135,000 represents approximately 40% of the venue capacity, which is being constrained to stem the spread of the virus.
Health officials credit rising vaccination rates in Indiana and nationwide for the state's ability to hold such a large gathering.
A year ago, the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" was held without a single fan in attendance for the first time in its history.
The 105th running of the race on Sunday will require spectators to wear masks when not eating or drinking, will check temperatures at the entrance and will have social distancing requirements inside the track.

“Superspreader event.”
Dumbest propaganda phrase ever said.
People are dropping masks faster than the virus ever spread. I think the libs will pay a price for dragging this on and on.
Good times.
...so much of those "patriotic" events/vibes are gone now.
Everything liberals/liberalism touches...turns into shyte.
Not trying to pick nits, but the ‘noose fiasco’ was NASCAR. This is IndyCar. Two different things.
The sadly ironic thing is...I still like NASCAR. I don’t get to watch it very often. And for once, a sponsor of one of the cars happens to be something I work for.
The #23 Doordash.
Which happens to be driven by....Bubba Wallace.
*facepalm*
That was a good size F1 crowd at the track. I don't think the last race at the track got anywhere near that after the tire fiasco the year before.
I always used to like watching the Victory dinner. Haven’t seen that in years.
We used to go out to the track a lot for time trials. Get a suntan, watch the people, have a couple few dranks. LOL It was a yearly fun thing.
Remember how crazy it was when the infield was open? People packed in there. Guys would have couches on the backs of their trucks. Grills fired up all over the place.
Everything is ruined now. The fun has been removed from almost everything. If the left would just disappear.
Imagine that. Stupid face muzzles at the Indy 500 are for silly pussies.
Just like kamala harris, the commie hoe...
So much for following the science. Several days ago I saw a woman and her 5 year old riding on a bicycle wearing masks in our gated community located on the ocean. Some people have become so traumatized they will never give up their masks, which really don’t work anyway. Imagine what it is doing to our children.
Yeah. I went to one of the F1 races. It was a crummy day. Cold and wet. The tire mess was typical of the F1 drama Queens and Americans lost interest quickly.
Juan Pablo Montoya
Is in the race.
I used to call him
“El Diablo”.
Now he’s the
“Big Drip.”
Sign of the Devil,,,
Interesting.
Indy 500 cars are
A bit different than
Drag or stock cars.
I worked on them
for 13 years.
Enjoy the Race!
I had better luck with the F1 races. Went to the 500 twice and got rained out
Roger that Kabar...
If you only get your news and information from CNN, MSNBC, or the Relic MEDIA...
...you are likely to wear at least one mask even if you are vaccinated...
...how do you spell stoopid...???
F1 races in the rain, Indy does not, so they delay usually to Monday. That only happened to me a couple of times in about 15 years. The problem with the race being in the rain is that so are you.
One of the rainouts was a double whammy. Got rained out on Monday also..
Kinda of a rarity, I hope you are not a gambler.
It was the 97 race. There are a few other multi day delays.

Still they have been running it for close to a hundred years.
God didn’t make little Green Apples .....

I sure hope nobody uses a garage door pull. There will be an influx of national cops to investigate.
Interesting,
Can you imagine
During a Pit Stop,
masked,
Changing a tire?
