Have lived in Japan since 1985 . Was a sumo fan when living in the Tokyo area until 1995 . Went to the Kokugikan once with a Japanese friend . Saw Chionofuji - one of the greats . Anyway , lost interest after moving to my wife’s hometown in Kumamoto where I taught JHS . Anyway , now living in Kumamoto City . Started watching sumo again in March and did watch the most recent tournament on TV with the wife . Very exciting finish . Congrats to Terunofuji !

A high BMI, especially in males, is a major COVID risk - I trust both competitors were wearing masks and observing social distancing to whatever extent possible.

While I don't understand anything about this sport and its rules and history, I find it strangely fascinating. Perhaps because it has a certain elegance, seems very ancient, has limited ethnicity, and hasn't been ruined by women.

Visiting Japan has always been on my bucket list as it seems a great place for an old woman who prefers to travel alone. But time and circumstance are trending in my not ever checking that box :(
