Yes, extensively.
That is the central effectiveness question that must be answered, to get regulatory authorization or approval (the other big question is how safe it is).
The formal trials that were conducted, are carefully designed to accurately assess that effectiveness. The design of those trials has been refined over the course of several decades, to exclude potential confounding factors, like non-random samples, financial interests, or even unconscious bias from tainting the results.
Pfizer and Moderna are around 95% effective - very strong, compared to average for vaccines.
That means that the infection rate of vaccinated people is only about 1/20th that of unvaccinated people, all other things being equal.
It is hard to make all other things equal, with real people living individual lives, but the trials are carefully controlled and analyzed, to avoid major variations between test and control subjects.
Different Countries require their own formal trials, and all of them have confirmed similar levels of effectiveness.
Beyond preventing infection in about 19 of 20 vaccinated people, who would otherwise be expected to contract COVID, they have also been shown to powerfully reduce the severity of any infections that do occur among the vaccinated. The protection against dying from COVID-19 amongst those fully vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna, is near 100%.

Innoculation was widespread in Europe at the time, and most British troops were immune to smallpox - only about 25% of colonials were. 90% of Continental Army deaths were from disease, and smallpox (variola) was the biggest killer.
Army units were so rife with it, that recruiting became difficult - death in combat was possible, but infection was almost assured. Whole regiments were taken out of action.
After Washington’s mass inoculation, no further Continental units were rendered combat ineffective by small pox - but local troops raised by the British (loyalists, Native Americans, slaves seeking freedom) continued to be ravaged.
Vaccination was a significant factor in the War for Independence.
