The gravitational potential energy approach for the rods from God is much better than my “calculation” based on chemical energy. The best one can do with that method is set an upper bound on the energy a rod might have.
You also have to account in some way for the kinetic energy based on the orbital velocity, but perhaps this is a wash with the energy lost due to re-entry friction.
