First he goes to the parents-- "turn around and salute your parents" to the cadets. Whereas Reagan asked the parents if they were as proud of the cadets as he was. Very different. But he followed Reagan's template (or Bidens idiot lazy speechwriter thought could get away with it).
JOE BIDEN Plagiarizes--Stole from Reagan- without acknowledging only saying "quote"- It was Reagan's CG mil aide who told him the "core of the Navy" adage. Also, a ridiculous tale about Beau Biden having his CO change his name to "Hunter" instead of Biden. Hunter being his mother's maiden name. Yeah-- right-- change the name on the uniform- if true completely wrong to do- and conveyed just the opposite, they KNEW who he was. And he is addressing Coast Guard (whom his son Hunter managed to get cocaine from the criminals the CG did not catch, while he was in a Naval Officer position not even OCS but by his father's influence. Great role model. And why they did not laugh).
Once again, Biden lies, and it is a terrible speech overall, and full of crap- his mind not there and reading poorly and stumbling. Really annoying to professional military how fake he is in real life, and incompetent.

Heard this on Chris Plante this morning. Reagan got laughs and a big cheer. Biden got the joke COMPLETELY screwed up and was met with absolute silence. Whatta dork.
Then went on to insult the graduating class.
That was fun!
In my mind’s eye, I can see and hear Reagan giving this speech.

The crowd in 1988 was raucous and loud on the Navy joke. Being in New London, CT the CG Academy has very close proximity to New London Naval Submarine Training facility and the base, as well as Electric Boat (submarine contractor since before WWII) good professional rivalry, not animus.
Very close work between CG and the US Submarine Service from way back— and with US Navy anti-submarine warfare conducted right off the East Coast. Several nice videos on the ships seen sunk by German U-Boats.

BTW great tag line- a Colt Single Action Army 45 cal. (7.5” barrel) would make a canoe.
