The J&J clinical trial numbers included more of the variants in their data, just because of the timing of when the trials were done. Subsequent testing with Moderna and Pfizer have demonstrated that while their effectiveness drops some with the South Africa and Brazil variants, they remain highly effective. The “boosters” (not really an accurate name since they’re actually a reformulation, similar to how the annual flu shot changes each year) should have a big impact improving efficacy with the new variants.
