US national cycling champion Gwen Inglis was struck and killed by a car on Sunday while training near her Denver home, authorities said. She was 47.
Inglis, the reigning US road race champion in the 45-to-49 age group, was riding with her husband, Mike, around 10am on Sunday in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a Nissan sedan driven by Ryan Scott Montoya, 29, drifted into the bike lane where she was riding.
Montoya remained at the scene and was facing possible charges of vehicular homicide, Lakewood police told local Fox affiliate KDVR-TV. Montoya told police he was not texting at the time of the accident, but admitted to drinking alcohol and using marijuana the night before, 9 News reported.

Yep, this could happen anytime you go out for a ride.
...drifted into the bike lane where she was riding.
The main reason I stopped bicyle commuting about 12 years ago was smart phones just made it way too dangerous.
I got hit by a car while sledding when I was 6. Totaled my brand new sled. Thank God for all of that snow, though!
I don’t even drive. Those discover america trips are no longer on the bucket list. Granted accidents can happen in front of one’s home but unfamiliar places raise the risk. Prayers for her.
Same here. Almost got taken out about 5 times and figured enough was enough
I grew up on a bicycle.
I used to ride and commute on motorcycles.
I no longer do either.
I got tired of all the idiots on the
road trying to kill me.
Now when someone hits me, I’m the one that
goes to them and ask are you OK?
For that to happen to a 6 year old, probably scared the heck out of you. Nevertheless, you have persisted.
I’m sure you had a lot to talk about with your other pals.
Montoya's "drifting" was probably assisted by alcohol and controlled substances. Montoya's rap sheet, mostly involving drugs and DUI, goes back to 2011.
Actually they told us in Driver’s Ed that the majority of accidents happen within a few miles of one’s home. They told us it was because people feel most confident while driving closer to home, thus more reckless, but I think it is just statistics - more people spend more time driving closer to their homes.
Text messaging murder got me off my Harley Davidson for keeps. It is too stinking dangerous to ride anything smaller than a 4Runner or Suburban.
Road fatalities have gone up in both Oregon and Colorado due to pot being legalized. I suspect others but those were the two I saw data for.
Oregon has now legalized hard drugs.
Well that news suckaroos. Used to ride bicycles everywhere as a kid and young adult. If I ever take it up again it will be limited to off road trails or where cars aint. Our society is too full of morons and less than stellar citizens legal and illegal.
He was too hung over to text.

Really scared the hell out of our neighbor who was driving that car and my Mom! They were both on the verge of losing their minds! LOL
I stopped commuting on my motorcycle for the same reason.
It can be really difficult out there.
