Some New Mexicans still choosing to wear masks in public spaces

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Fully vaccinated people no longer have to wear masks, but some people are still choosing to wear one in public places which has caused some uncomfortable situations. At the beginning of the pandemic, people were shamed for wearing masks, now the tables seem to have turned and when people aren’t wearing a mask they get some looks.

“Most people have them, and then there are some without them, and those people kind of just stand out,” said Andres Ramirez, a customer at Walmart.

As more New Mexicans continue to get vaccinated, many people KRQE News 13 saw grocery shopping throughout the metro Monday were still masked up. With grocery stores like Smith’s and Lowes Neighborhood Market on 12th and Lomas still requiring people to wear masks at all times.

That isn’t the policy at Walmart which allows customers to go maskless if they’re fully vaccinated. KRQE News 13 crews saw most of the people in the store were wearing masks and it was just a couple of people not wearing masks getting some strange looks.

One man said he’s fully vaccinated and feels comfortable living life without a mask.

“Well, it’s a relief, it really is a relief, it’s like when I was able to throw my neckties away because I didn’t have to have neckties,” said Loren Dunbar, who was shopping at Walmart. “It just felt good, one less thing.”

Other shoppers say they’re fully vaccinated and said they’ll probably continue to wear masks for the next few weeks until they feel more comfortable to take them off. Many of them said they don’t trust the honor system, having to believe whether people are actually vaccinated.

They can stay at home then.

Except for the choosing to be dehumanizing and all the other problems this has created

Letter to the Editor: Wearing masks is dehumanizing
By Charles Steele - October 29, 2020 1736 0
Dear Editor,

I greatly appreciated Emma Cummins’ observations in “Resist Masktopia” (Collegian, 22 Oct. 2020). I can understand how, in certain limited, specific situations, the wearing of properly constructed masks and following proper medical protocols regarding use, handling, and changing, could be beneficial. But the universal wearing of masks, in all situations, strikes me as ill-considered and dangerous.

Universal mask-wearing is dehumanizing. We are being conditioned to regard each other as biohazards and objects to be feared, instead of fellow human beings. Whether this is intentional or not, it’s one of the most horrible and sinister trends I’ve seen in my lifetime.

If someone feels safer with a mask, I don’t begrudge them wearing it. But those who wear masks as a form of conformist virtue-signaling — let’s just say their commitment to liberty is suspect. What other purpose does a mask serve when one is walking outdoors with the nearest person 100 yards away, or one is driving alone in one’s car?

Those who disagree with me are welcome to direct me to all the double-blind, peer-reviewed studies showing that general masking stops the spread of the coronavirus. I’ll be happy to be corrected. Until then, I’m skeptical that our public health experts have such evidence, simply because their other remedy – general lockdowns – were imposed with exactly zero consideration of the costs and consequences, and they’ve inflicted great damage on people. (And thank you to professor of chemistry Christopher Hamilton for sending me a few sources.)

I’m grateful to Emma Cummins for speaking out against what looks to me like an awful lot of unthinking conformity.

Charles N. Steele

We are getting to the point where we don’t need to have two separate countries but two separate planets. I want a different galaxy than these people. To live in such fear.

give it up. the key word is “choose”. people are choosing to continue to wear masks. it’s up to them. not you, or me, or anyone else.

try to cope.

you can’t live in the same galaxy as someone that chooses to wear a mask?

Lots of shops are still posted, requiring masks. Dairy Queen here was still drive through only.
If I see the posted signs and if everybody else does it, I still put the mask on as not to upset anybody. But never outside!

As predicted, expected.

MY opinion is 10 - 20 % of the population will keep the mask on "just in case"

Hot Flash! Masks are symbols of Party Membership.

It's nice to have our enemies ID themselves, with a tag that can be seen at 400 meters...

masks are masks. just not a big deal. what is a big deal are the people that want to move to another galaxy because they can’t exist on the same planet as someone who chooses to continue to wear a mask.

oh, and people that want to declare a total stranger an “enemy” over an article of clothing. that seems like a big deal.

When you’re a social sheep, you listen to your social masters. Government propaganda for over a year straight is hard for the sheep disregard. Free thinking is hard!

It is similar here in Phoenix. I haven’t noticed getting any glares from the many masky people. Then again, if I get a glare from a stooge or a chump, I am not particularly bothered by it.

Other people can wear masks if they like, or not. I don’t care.

choosing. people are choosing. I know this is FR, and all, but why are we turning people choosing to wear masks into a pogrom.

It’s mystifying to me. people must not have enough conflict in their lives.

Agreed. I’m against mandates, but I’m completely in favor of individuals making individual choices about what’s best for their own health and safety, and I support their right to do so. Wear a mask or don’t wear one, that’s up to you. I respect your risk to make that decision. None of us know the reasons why someone may be exercising additional caution. Chemo patients need groceries too.

I also support the right of private property owners to set their own rules. That includes both individuals for their private residences and business owners. No shirt, no shoes, no service is a time honored set of requirements. If someone doesn’t wish to abide by the requirements, they should not enter the property. Fancy restaurants often require suits and ties, which is why I rarely eat at such places. But that’s my choice to put my money into businesses that align with my individual beliefs and preferences. I would never try to force my way into such a place against their requirements anymore than I would attempt to force my way into a private citizen’s home.
