So, a $100,000 Patek Philipe is more accurate than a $2 digital from Walmart?
Sorry, “Philippe”
The measurement of time is a myth because time only lapses and therefore can not be measured.
Entropy is always increasing.
We can now make atomic clocks that are so accurate, that they are useless for the keeping of time. They are so accurate, that if you have two of them in a room, and one is on the floor, while the other is on a table, the two clocks will deviate from one another because of the difference in gravity (which affects the flow of time) between the two clocks. Because the two clocks can’t agree on the time, you can’t really have a reference time between them without performing extra calculations to determine the reference time.
Nonsense.
A clock records the passing of time, it does not change the passing of time; it is a statement of an observation, not of a cause, and if there is entropy in the universe it is derived from a cause, not the mere mechanical observation of time.
If there is more entropy over time, it is not the mechanical observation of time that is creating the entropy, it would be happening with zero mechanical observation of time. If more entropy is observed, it was not the mechanical observation of time that was creating it.
The clocks are not “creating” entropy.
While I generally agree, I think there is a place for both. I'm a huge fan of mechanicals, and own enough that I actually have a winder. Still, having a quartz beater that you don't have to worry about destroying is a useful thing.
Someday I'll own a perpetual calendar. IWC has one I've been looking at, but I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.
The measurement of time is a human invention. The Lord created time itself, and being immortal, has no need for such measurements that I can see.
An 'hour' is merely an arbitrary measurement of the passage of time. The same thing can be said for a 'mile', which is an arbitrary measurement of a given distance.
Clocks, calendars and the like are merely conveniences that we mortals use to measure our all to brief life, and to help us extract some small bit of meaning and understanding from it.
That was a great story. Hadn’t seen it before.
What’s the difference between an Engineer and a Physicist?
An Engineer and a Physicist were at one end of a hallway. Miss Universe was at the other. A bystander said, why don’t you guys race to that girl? When I say “Go”, you two start moving. Go half the distance to her, stop and count to three, then go half the remaining distance, stop and count, and just keep going that way until one of you gets to her.
The man shouted “GO!”, and the Physicist stayed put, but the Engineer started running.
“Why aren’t you moving?” the man asked the Physicist. “Because I’ll never get there,” he replied.
“Why are you running?”, the man shouted to the Engineer.
“I can get close enough!” he replied...
I have both quartz and automatic in my collection including a G-Shock and a Bulova Moon Watch. The IWC is a great choice. I too am having trouble pulling the trigger on a $5000+ watch. My first might be a Grand Seiko Snowflake or something by Glashutte Original. Their A. Lange homage is a killer.
Beavers might not have evolved from crabs, but sometimes crabs emerge from beavers.
It took me a parsec to figure out the error.
Indeed, good to find another one here!
I really like the GS Snowflake. I have one Grand Seiko that I bought a few years ago. Really like it. It's the perfect size for me, as I have fairly small wrists. 40mm+ watches seem like I'm wearing a freaking barbell or something. Good to see that Rolex is starting to size down a bit on some of their more recent offerings. Hopefully, that will lead the industry in that direction. Glashutte makes some really nice stuff. I've been looking at them as well.
I keep up with stuff via the Hodinkee website, and sometimes ablogtowatch. I have a good friend who has always thought I was a bit batty about the subject of watches and timekeeping, but I think I've finally managed to bring him around a bit on it. That's not to say that I'm not a bit batty about it, but everyone needs a hobby. (besides firearms) LOL
By the time you read the data, time has already moved on.
“Like I might be my own grandpa after all?”
I’m My Own Grandpa
Willie Nelson
Now, many many years ago
When I was twenty three
I was married to a widow
Who was pretty as could be
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Had hair of red
My father fell in love with her
And soon the two were wed
This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life
My daughter was my mother
‘Cause she was my father’s wife
To complicate the matters
Even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy
My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle
Though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle
That also made him the brother
Of the widow’s grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother
I’m my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I’m my own grandpa
My father’s wife then had a son
That kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild
For he was my daughter’s son
My wife is now my mother’s mother
And it makes me blue
Because, she is my wife
She’s my grandmother too
I’m my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I’m my own grandpa
Now, if my wife is my grandmother
Then, I am her grandchild
And every time I think of it
It nearly drives me wild
For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother
I am my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I’m my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
I’m my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I’m my own grandpa

Thanks LucyT. Boss, I'll be late for work, entropy.
Finding this real hard to believe.
I bezel not true.
Then every time a rock group has any timing of any sort, the universe has gotten worse.
This is ridiculous.
