So are they still using grades and grade point average then? If so, couldn’t those also be found to be a racist metric? Trying to think of where the end point to this reasoning is.

The ACT and SAT are excellent predictors of student success in college. They’re about as objective as you can get. Losing such a useful metric is almost guaranteed to hurt the integrity of the admissions process. But, that’s social justice for you, right?

The settlement specifies that the university can still use SAT and ACT scores to determine course placement after the students are accepted. But the nine campuses will no longer use the test scores to determine how to award scholarships

This is already in effect, as colleges already ignore low SAT scores based on student "demographics."

With this from UC system, we can finally discard the lie that every student stands on an equal basis. The SAT is now a high-end-only test, which will finally bring it back to being what it was originally intended to do: measure merit, not birth status (rich, poor, black, white, etc), which it has become.

That said, the worst casualty here will be high-scoring black kids who will now be measured against other black kids by GPA and not SAT scores. (UC and every college admissions office knows that GPA is not a standard metric.)
