A proposal to tackle homelessness in Los Angeles with temporary homeless encampments at government-owned parks and beachfront lots is prompting fierce blowback from residents — who fear it’ll turn public spaces into hotbeds for crime without addressing the underlining issues causing homelessness.
The plan put forth by Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin seeks to allow homeless people to pitch tents and receive social services at family-friendly outdoor spaces across the Westside — including Westchester Park, Mar Vista Park, Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey and Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades.
The proposal, slated for a City Council vote later this month, also calls for a temporary site for single-occupancy “tiny homes” or safe camping areas at a county-owned parking lot in Marina del Rey, as well as property at Los Angeles International Airport.
But the plan has sparked a massive recall effort by residents who claim that their local parks and beaches are already inundated by tents, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Oh, I read “Bowerman and the Men of Oregon” that has a whole section on Bill’s run-in with the Rajneeshpuram cult. I think there was a whole documentary about this cult as well.
Sounds good. Load ‘em up and cut the rode.
Normally I don't experience schadenfreude, but in this case..
On Netflix there was an entertaining documentary called Wild Wild Country.
I was just showing that, properly applied, a little bit of money can go a long way. I think they had about 60,000 acres of land but from that image it appears to be only a few 100 acres at most, to house many thousands of people.
The problem isn’t so much about poverty. This is not 1929.
I was thinking, up the tread, wasn't Venice Beach once a tourist destination...or some such?
The average person from the Midwest that dreams of coming to California is wanting to see the beaches not the homeless.
There’s no such thing as “government-owned” in the United States. It’s citizen-owned. Residents need to send the homeless to the mayor’s house. Let them camp out in the yard.
> They love them...as long as they don’t have to see them. <
Yep. That’s just how liberals roll.
Tax the rich. But don’t tax me.
Defund the police. But keep my neighborhood safe.
Put up windmills to save the environment. But don’t obstruct my view.
here is my proposal. I live in California so I have a good idea how angry my proposal will make the left and the right...
Require that every gated community house a one long term homeless person that has a drug charge (2 or more years homeless)for every 10 in residence.... I am sick of the legislature not taking care of this problem. I unfortunately do not have a gate on my community. this means that my condo has homeless going through my garbage can and camping out in my neighborhood. If you go to the freeway which is a block away and you have a tent town filled with garbage that periodically is cleared out by the police and highway patrol. The place is so dirty that they have to wear hazmat suits. this encampment always returns.
The parks in my town that are not behind private gates have become a place to buy varies drugs. they are not safe for parents to take there small children to. The big problem is that those who control how homeless is dealt with are the ones who have walled themselves off from the problem.

Free booze and drugs at some out of the way place. F the support services.
It is multiple things ... the combination of a nation awash in drugs and drug addiction, mental illness (fried brains) from years of drug use, lax law enforcement, and easy access to welfare.
In other words, liberalism.
I spent a few days there in the 90's. The Beach was beautiful. The neighborhood was very upscale with nice restaurants. I suppose that's all gone now . . .
You crapped in your own nest. Live with it.
Could be entertaining, like “Thunderdome”
Beaches are generally not centrally located to convenient social services. If the object is to put citizens into the social service system and get them off the street, that is. Then there’s the loss to the city of property and retail taxes as the businesses and homes around beach areas are devalued - owners wise enough to know there’s more than one beach in the world. But maybe turning LA 100% welfare-majority latino instead of 70% latino is the goal as mexican colonialism and the destruction of western culture marches north from San Diego?
And to turn environmentalists on their heads - homeless encampments on beaches is a direct danger to dune and tital pool life - tidal pool life seen by some cultures as a delicacy to be harvested with impunity simply because it’s there, in contrast to the look-don’t-touch, leave for others to enjoy, credo of American culture.
Your plot is a pig stye!
Send them to Barbra Streisand and Alyssa Milano’s house.
Yep. They also complain they don’t pay enough taxes, but I’ve yet to see any one of them open their checkbook and write a million dollar check to Treasury, just for the heck of it.
I can fix the Homeless problem in Los ANgeles in 6 months easy!
1. Turn the Coliseum into a Giant Camp, round up all the homeless and lock them in there with social workers of course to care for their needs.
2. Every Friday Night just before Dark, Every Police Agency in the County brings ALL Opiates, Fentanyl, Heroin..., a Large supply of needles and GIVE IT AWAY IN THE COLISEUM. Within 3 months the number of Homeless should be significantly reduced and manageable.
3. Tell USC if they ever want to use the Coliseum again they need to hold ALL Psychiatry, Psychological and Social Work classes At the Coliseum with LIVE Subjects, time to Put what you Teach into Practice and Rehabilitate these people. I would also have Every Social Worker in the County stationed there FULL TIME where they are needed.
4 Continue giving away the Dangerous Drugs
