They looked fine for most things, but I saw some less than stellar efficacy data for the South Africa variant that was a bit concerning. Even if those results are confirmed, their overall efficacy is still good enough to be a useful tool (e.g. 89% in UK Phase 3).
Yes, but if you’re shipping people to COVID hotspots, you’re basically conducting challenge trials. There’s a lot of ethical issues surrounding that. I’m not totally against challenge trials for willing participants, but that would need to be part of the original scoping for that trial, with highly controlled conditions to prevent uncontrolled transmission and lots of medical support ready to treat anyone who develops serious symptoms; particular within any control group.
