Teenager accidentally moves into retirement village after skipping flat viewing

A teenager claims she accidentally moved into a retirement village after signing her tenancy agreement without viewing the property.

Madison Kohout, 19, was left puzzled when all of her neighbours appeared to be over the age of 65 after she moved into a flat in Arkansas.

A week later, she stumbled across a sign that explained everything – she is the only teenager living in a community of pensioners.

The nursing assistant, who had moved there from Oklahoma, filmed herself covering her face in embarrassment as she stood next to a ‘Senior Citizens Apartments’ sign.

However, while other teens may crave neighbours their own age, Madison is loving her new neighbourhood as she gets ‘to have extra sets of grandparents’.

In a video update, she said: ‘How is life at the old folks’ home you might ask? Let me show you. When I get home it’s usually always super quiet.

‘Because most of my neighbors are asleep by the time I get home. But one major perk is that I can play music whenever I want to, because some of them can’t hear.

‘Another fun thing about living in the old folks’ home is I can always hear about the tea in town.

‘Another fun thing is whenever I get to come home after a long day, everyone asks me how I’m doing.

‘Anyway that’s how my life is going here at the old folks’ home. And just remember if you’re struggling with rent, start your early retirement.’

When questioned on how a teenager was allowed to move into a retirement village, Madison explained it is equal-opportunity housing that doesn’t discriminate on age, despite being designed for senior citizens.

She told Newsweek the cheap rent was a ‘financial blessing, revealing she pays $350 (£251) a month for a two-bedroom flat.

She said: ‘I plan on staying for quite a while! I absolutely love my neighbors… Never in my entire life did I think I would be living in a retirement home.

‘This is something that I could have never imagined.’

She’s a nursing assistant who undoubtedly has some medical skills. She could be of help to the residents with advice, medication admin, or simple, first aid-like treatments, Good Samaritan laws applying. And if she’s AED trained or CPR/BLS certified, all the better for a possible emergency.

A lot of the elderly are very lonely folk so she might be an added plus for them.

Why? She’s a nursing assistant and can probably use a quiet place to live. And the senior citizens probably enjoy having some youthfulness around.

Cheap rent for a nursing assistant, how is that stupid? If she’d ended up in a brothel, then she’d be stupid.

I would think so and I imagine whatever fund/grant is subsidizing the rent would also have rules that applied. This sounds like of suspect unless it’s a temporary thing because not enough people were renting the units.

Hey, it worked for Kramer.

Just be sure there is an extra ambulance available on Sadie Hawkins dance night.

I hope she’s not supplanting a senior who needs that apt.

She’s the center of attention there now. The old folks won’t willingly let her go.

After reading that and passing the news on to all of their neighbors, the hordes from slums in blue states all over the U.S. are heading there now. So there goes Arkansas, swirling down...

She may have known going in - in order to become the center of attention on the internet. If she does a good job she could make a lot of money on the internet with this whole thing.

I moved into an apartment building that had recently been a retirement community so most of the residents were older (I was 30 at the time). It was always quiet, clean, and friendly. Once I went down to the laundry room and found my clothes folded in the basket. I let some of them know that if I was there I would be happy to carry in their groceries or help move things. It was a great experience.

If it’s a subsidized senior housing facility, she took the place of an old person who is waiting for an apartment. I am not surprised that this happened with “the system.”

“Why? She could be a big help to some of her neighbors.”

Very true and as long as she behaves, they should keep her. My outburst was because I know she’s playing her followers. She knows EXACTLY what she rented and I don’t blame her for renting it. In fact, I virtually did the same thing at ESU, as I was (and still am) very easily distracted. In my case, not a formal Seniors building, but 2/3’s seniors (and 2 miles from campus). It was GREAT...turned the corner and made it through college from there.
