My mom's cousins made syrup in Canada. No more buckets collecting syrup: a maple forest crisscrossed with plastic tubes going to a vacuum chamber. They then moved the syrup from there to an ancient wood boiler to boil down the syrup.

I love the stuff but ate enough then to be sick of it for quite a while.

I knew some folks who did this as a side gig. It was the closest thing to free money I’ve ever seen.

The sugar shack was heated with wood from their land, The trees they tapped were actually their neighbors. It was time consuming but their only actual cost was bottles and labels

Funny. I loved maple syrup, and that was all we served on Sunday morning pancakes with the kids. Until my son had Log Cabin syrup at a friend’s house. That was all he wanted afterwards

How soon before we hear that the boy is exploiting the trees? Plants/animals as an arbitrary distinction. How is tapping a maple tree different from being a vampire?
