I was lucky, I served in a Chaparral/Vulcan battalion when I was in Germany. While women were being force fed into Nike Hercules batteries, women were not allowed in short range air defense units, as we were normally attached to infantry and armor divisions.

My battalion's primary mission was short range air defense for Hahn, Bitburg, and Spangdahlem air bases. Couldn't have asked for a better assignment. The battery at Hahn was 40 miles from battalion HQ, which was awesome. During alerts, the firing batteries were put under the command of the Air Force Wing Commander...iow, our higher hq couldn't screw with us during those 4-5 days, which I thought was awesome.

IIRC, our battalion was deactivated in the mid-90s.
