One of two young Americans convicted Wednesday of killing a Rome police officer "is in a bad place" after being sentenced to life imprisonment, Italy's stiffest sentence, a lawyer and spokesman for his family told CBS News.
Elder and his co-defendant Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, now 20, got into an altercation with two police officers in July 2019 while the two friends — then teenagers — were on vacation in Rome. During the incident, Elder stabbed officer Mario Cerciello Rega 11 times with a 7-inch military-style knife he had brought from the United States, while Natale-Hjorth fought with another officer, Andrea Varriale.

Costruisci il muro!
They can rot in jail for murdering someone like that.
Well, execute them, save the risk of them committing future crimes.
Stabbed the officer 11 times with a 7” blade?
Death penalty!
I do not like this sympathy with American criminals in jail abroad.
You shall respect the laws of the country you are visiting and do not count on getting away with murder, just because you are American. Spend the rest of your life in the worst Italian prison they have there, I do not care!
Sometimes, people get arrested abroad because the country hates America and arrest them on trumped up charges, just because. That’s different and I support all efforts to get them out. Otto Warmbier comes to my mind, but there are many.
But we should never try to help obvious criminals, just because they are Americans. Nobody should have any compassion with those!
You think Rome needs a wall to keep them out or
the USA to build a wall to keep them here?
Perhaps cbs and the other liberals would like them sprung for killing a cop! We have seen how much liberals hate cops.
Let them rot in jail.
I welcome that they are both given life sentences, even though one was just an accomplice. These rich kids need to pay for their actions, again, too bad they can’t be executed, which is what should occur. Let them rot in jail for the rest of their lives.
Yeah- they killed an undercover cop in the commission of multiple crimes. They can rot in jail.
Who even thinks about stabbing anyone?
Be a shame if they got shanked in prison.
Yep. They should consider themselves lucky. They should have gotten the death penalty.
Reading the details of the story make the case seem a bit less “cut & dry”, as the police were there on behalf of a drug dealing police informant who had ripped off the two Americans earlier in the night, were in plainclothes, and there is a question of whether they even identified themselves as police before the fight started.
Both boys had been arrested multiple times in the US for drug
Selling and usage but they always got a slap on the wrist.
Uh, ISGAS.
I Scarcely Give A S***.
It’s times like that, that there’s something to be said for an eye for an eye.
Maybe they didn’t speak Italian
“After 10 years (8 in case of good behavior) the prisoner may be given permission to work outside the prison during the day and/or to spend up to 45 days a year at home, and after 26 (or 21 in case of good behavior) years, they may be paroled.”
It’s irrelevant whether they were identified as LEO’s.
Those kids murdered someone, stabbed the one guy 11 times!
He deserves life. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
If they weren’t drug dealing, there wouldn’t have been any problems.
They got less of a sentence than they deserved, Italy is doing us a favor.
