Definitely. And it shows that I’ve spent more time listening to the Indy 500 on the radio than watching it on TV. I was usually on the road for my spring visit to my mother until she died a few years ago, thus listened to it. And I didn’t watch any of the Indy car races because they were on cable, which I didn’t have.
Yep. They can not be MORE obvious.
When Gordon Johncock beat Rick Mears was a great race.
Met Rick Mears at a hospital I worked at in Indy. He was a pompous a$$hole.
Correction Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
Guess you haven’t tuned in for a really long time. Race 1 is a good example with a 40 year old winning the race and a rookie in 2nd place. Scott Dixon isn’t really that hard to pronounce if you work at it.
I’ve heard that from other people too.
“Much too young to die...”
Not really, 87 years is a pretty good run, he had a full and exciting life and accomplished more than most people could ever dream of. Just say’n.
We used to go regularly with a friend whose family has had tickets high in the fourth turn since before the last ice age. That ended when the kids' school calendars made it impossible to get back to Indiana for Memorial Day. I'd go again for old time's sake, but it's not the same spectacle. The magic is gone. Heck, Jim Nabors ain't even there anymore.
Well, I'm probably biased because I'm 87.5, have already done & experienced a zillion things, but, still have a huge bucket list of stuff to get done...😀
Need at least 15 more years and then I'll think about packing it in...
RIP.
I went to high school in Colorado Springs in the early 70s and it was a big deal when Bobby Unser entered the Pikes Peak hillclimb. I think it was the first time such a big name had entered. He wiped the field and set a course record. Left the city soon after so I didn’t know he continued to race it and his brother Al raced as well but not surprised they continued to dominate.
From the 2020 season onwards, the IndyCar Series will implement a cockpit protection system. This consists of a combination of the Halo mandated in Formula One and a reinforced windscreen dubbed the “aeroscreen”, provided by Red Bull Advanced Technologies, to lessen the probability of traumatic head injuries from flying debris.
And I have no intention to do so now.
Went to my first race in 1967. I've wrenched on a lot of race cars over the years. I know what I like, and the current version of Indy car isn't it, Scott Dixon or not.
Indycar was a double header at TMS (Denton/Ft. Worth) Saturday and Sunday. A }{€££ of a lot better than watching f1 hand another one to poor widdle blm boy.
RIP Mr. Bobbie Unser. One less in the Unser Underground Unlimited around ABQ.
That was back when most race cars that ran at Indy were front-engined using the four-cylinder Offenhauser engine. The success of the rear-engined race cars from England forced Indy racer designers to go to rear-engined cars by the late 1960's.
They should have just banned the F1 cars. How many sanctioning bodies have they run through now for Indy? I remember USAC, CART, and IRL. It was USAC during the British Invasion.
I only got to one open wheel race - as I recall, Andretti won the one I saw.
Good luck, I hope you accomplish everything you dream of.
