TRIMBLE, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife said a woman was found dead off U.S. Highway 550 after a suspected bear attack on Friday.

According to her boyfriend, the 39-year-old victim was believed to have gone walking with her two dogs earlier Friday, La Plata County Sheriff’s office said.

Her boyfriend told police he got home around 8:30 p.m. and the dogs were present but his girlfriend was not there.

After searching for her, he found her body around 9:30 p.m. and called 911.

When CPW wildlife officers responded, they found signs of consumption on the body and an abundance of bear scat and hair at the scene.

Our son does a lot of mountain biking in the Fort Collins area. The scariest wildlife there are the rattlesnakes.

“I bet that he found her right where he left her.”

But the hard part was luring a bear over to her and leaving sign to be found. Black bears will eat carrion as long as it is not rotten. And they’ll even eat around the rotten parts.

I’m surprised the bear didn’t bury the remainder of the kill. If an animal is killed in the open, the bear may drag it into the woods or brush, and cover the remains with leaves, grass, soil, and forest debris. It’ll be back as they normally will kill a single animal and feed on it for a while. Dealt with them in Alaska and had a few head ups. But not aggressive. Maybe I didn’t look very good.

Don't bet on that. If there are deer, mountain lions are likely close.

Remember the Fort Collins trail runner who killed an attacking mountain lion?

Travis Kauffman says he’s glad his 15 seconds of fame has come and gone.

A 10-year-old boy was killed by a mountain lion while hiking near Grand Lake in 1997, and an adult runner was killed in Idaho Springs in 1991.

I guess I am naive about this, but in areas like Colorado, (known to be full of wild animals) are there designated “Safe Zones” for hikers, or is any wilderness walk in Colorado going to be a throw of the dice?

In other words, I thought they could have stayed out of areas most likely to be the territory of Bears. There are certain regions of California like that too.

I've hiked and camped all over the wilds of California for the last 50 years and I have never heard of a "safe" area without wild animals.

Apologies. I misread. The large male killed was involved in a 2009 bear killing mentioned in the same article.

A Steamboat Springs couple ( September 13, 2018 ) had a scary encounter with a mountain lion ... Mark Stanford and his wife.. “I looked up and saw a set of eyes staring back at me,”

“I could see that it was a big cat,”..

Mark Stanford was carrying a firearm, and he shot off a round to try and scare the animal. It ran off and the couple started hiking again before discovering the animal again on the trail.

They were being hunted.

A woman in Canada jumped on a mountain lion and prised its jaws open to rescue her 7-year-old son as he was mauled in their backyard…

Kevin said that he started to cry when he arrived at the hospital, because his son was “covered in blood.”

Bears attack because sometimes that what bears do.

Uh.OK. Makes sense. I think this is called a tautology, or circular logic.

What do bears eat? Let me guess: bear food.

Fatal black bear attacks on humans are so rare — more so than any other species of bear — that they occur on average of once per year across North America, Garshelis said. In addition, about one black bear out of 1 million will attack a human in a predatory manner, Rogers said.

While omnivorous, Black bears prefer BERRIES to humans.

Too much is made about a “mother with cubs”. I came across a mother with 2 cubs and all she wanted to do was GET AWAY from us.

I admit I was a bit nervous, but that’s because of all the hype about a “mother with cubs”.

We are in northern Los Angeles, against the foothills. We often have bears wander into town; they go to the swimming pools, even. They also follow the trash guys - Monday morning pickup will have Sunday evening pizza boxes scattered.

My husband met a bear on the trail not 1/2 mile in from town; on another trail from town, a man was attacked by two bears. The first one bit him, but he rolled in a ball and started hiking back to the parking lot, also 1/2 mile away. Another bear attacked him before he got to town.

What’s a safe zone for a bear? A posted sign? A fenced trail, perhaps, with a lock? You are on your own in the wilderness, and you need to be aware. Hard to know with this poor woman if she was hiking at dusk/ had left earlier in the morning/ etc. Terrible. And our border collie, fierce as he was and an Alpha Male, turned his head when we ran into a bear in an alley near here. No way HE was going to take him on.

Didn’t they also pass some fool law in Colorado that invites grizzlies in and wolves? Because they don’t often eat Boulder-ites or whoever wrote those idiot bills.

Wolves, yes. And the Dominion machines in CO voted in favor of introducing them. (not re-introducing because Canadian wolves were never native here)
