Woman killed in suspected bear attack near Durango, CPW says

TRIMBLE, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife said a woman was found dead off U.S. Highway 550 after a suspected bear attack on Friday.

According to her boyfriend, the 39-year-old victim was believed to have gone walking with her two dogs earlier Friday, La Plata County Sheriff’s office said.

Her boyfriend told police he got home around 8:30 p.m. and the dogs were present but his girlfriend was not there.

After searching for her, he found her body around 9:30 p.m. and called 911.

When CPW wildlife officers responded, they found signs of consumption on the body and an abundance of bear scat and hair at the scene.

Obviously the 2 dogs weren’t rotties or German shepherds....

I guess I am naive about this, but in areas like Colorado,
(known to be full of wild animals) are there designated “Safe Zones” for hikers, or is any wilderness walk in Colorado going to be a throw of the dice?

In other words, I thought they could have stayed out of areas most likely to be the territory of Bears.
There are certain regions of California like that too.

It was a bear with 2 cubs - that’s a dangerous situation to come upon. The dogs were probably barking & the bear felt threatened.

Charles W. Mock IV, 40, was fishing outside of West Yellowstone when a bear recently attacked and killed him .. bears can run up to 40 mph.

She probably had 2 cute little lapdogs that were totally useless..

Bears attack mostly because they have been surprised, or a sow has cubs nearby. A minority are predatory attacks where the bear actual sees you as prey.

Or even a shih tzu. I cannot think of an adult dog of any size from chihuahua to mastiff that wouldn’t at least get hurt trying to protect his or her owner, unless old and blind and senile.
