I used to have his tin cup from the ship but donated it to a veterans museum - my mother kept clothespins in it for 50 years.

How cool is that? Did it say USS Boston on it, by chance?

The cup had "US" on the handle, no other markings. It appears the army and navy used the same coffee cups from 1874 to the beginning of World War I before the USN went to ceramic years later. The guys at the museum had never seen one.
