When I was in Germany in the early seventies, the subject of “Wiederholbarkeit” (repeatability)—as in, “can the Nazi era be repeated?—sometimes came up as a topic of discussion. At the time, a repeat of the Nazi era seemed ridiculous; now it doesn’t seem so.
