Vaccinations have slowed but having reached over 101 million Americans now fully vaccinated is still pretty impressive.

This slower rate of first doses is a bubble in the pipeline - it will produce correspondingly slow second shots 3 or 4 weeks later for second shots.

I believe if President Trump was in charge, we would see more results - or folks would get fired.

Almost everyone is now fully vaccinated where I work. There’s really no longer any point, if there ever was one, in wearing masks.

No covid icu admits in many days. Occasional regular floor covid pts but much better than was. I just have one to see this weekend.
Thanks to all those who vaccinated. To those who haven’t and won’t I respect your option.

Sorry, but I must disagree. I don't believe the significant slowdown in dispensed vaccines has anything to do with the availability, administration logistics or any other bureaucratic issue.

It's the lack of importance of getting the immunization in the minds of those who have not yet received a vaccine. I going to make another prediction.....Unless things change drastically, you are going to begin seeing vaccine doses discarded increasingly more often and in much greater numbers because of not having been administered before use by dates.

Just watch and see.

Nah, they’ll just start becoming more easily available. When you walk into Walgreens or CVS, they’ll offer you a shot on the spot free or charge. They’ll set up mobile vaccination points outside Walmart, Costco, and grocery stores offering free shots on the spot.

You’ll see a new wave of people who have no objection to getting the shot, but aren’t motivated enough to figure out who has it, when they can make appointments, and standing in long lines to get it. I think we’ll hit around 75% of adults before that happens and then I think we’ll see another ~15% who get vaccinated when they don’t need to go out of their way to do it. Lots of people can’t take time off, find a babysitter, etc. They’re living hand-to-mouth and running as fast as they can just to stand still. You have to meet those people where they are if you want to reach them, and that’s at the grocery store. Because we all have to eat.

Another ~5-7% will hold out waiting for full FDA approval. That should come by the end of this summer. Maybe fall at the latest. The last 3% or so have bought into the conspiracy theories and think Bill Gates stole Alien DNA from Area 51 to make mind control chips and give everyone the mark of the beast to kick off Armageddon.

Now let's add some proper context to this, shall we?

Time will determine which of us is correct but much of what I’ve seen and heard in my rural area confirms my assertion.

We’ll pretty much know for sure by the end of next month.

I don’t think we disagree that much here. You’ve said it’s a lack of urgency about getting vaccinated. I agree with that. I think where we may differ is in the response to that attitude. The smart response (and what I think will happen) is to just make it so easy that nearly everyone does it.

Now if they fail to do so, or it isn’t done effectively, it’ll take a lot more time to get the rest of those who are just unmotivated.

Well, maybe we disagree a bit more than that.

I’ll give you an example. We have a huge Walmart distribution Center on the outskirts of town and a few weeks back they had a dozen med professionals go out to the facility loaded with some 600+ doses. They were there the entire day and inoculated a grand total of 42 people. Nobody else would take it.

Maybe not what the majority of folks in this town are thinking but it does give one an indication.

Also possible there’s a lot of people there waiting for the full FDA authorization to come. Pfizer and Moderna have all the data required. They should be submitting the paperwork in May. Nothing holding it up besides bureaucratic red tape, so expect to see that come through in the later summer or fall.

Hopefully that brings a lot of the folks in your town to a level of comfort that they will take the vaccines. The more who are vaccinated, the less opportunity this thing has to spread and mutate. I want the pandemic to end along with all the destructive actions of state and local governments. President Trump’s vaccines make that happen quicker than anything else.

So 101 million fully vaccinated plus 32 million cases puts us at 40% with antibodies. Another 44 mill partially vaxxed gets us over 50%.

I’m still curious about how long the inventory will last before It expires. Hate to see if get thrown out like stale bread or apples.

The numbers could be better, but that's not too bad. Received the second dose yesterday. No side effects while building forms and mixing and pouring some concrete by hand for a home project. No side effects today, either.

Had very mild side effects after the first dose about a month ago, but they weren't bad: barely noticeable fever, tired, etc., for about a day.

And don't forget mad cow disease! ;D

The funny farm folks say that vaccinated people will still be "shedding" the virus (and mad cow prions) to transmit some interesting problems to them. Don't know how we'd be able to tell the difference by observing their behavior, though.

The pros who estimate the total number of actual infections, like the CDC and John Hopkins, estimate that several times the number of confirmed cases have actually been exposed.

Many infections have no symptoms, and many with symptoms were not tested for COVID.

CDC estimated that last year, 83 million Americans were likely exposed to the virus, so that should be well over 100 million by now. Dr. Makary of John Hopkins estimated that there could now be 150-180 million Americans already exposed to COVID (he projected herd immunity beginning to emerge around the end of April).

Who knows how many of the people who have already been exposed, have also gotten vaccinated? There will be some degree of overlap. But as you point out, the combination of natural immunity and vaccination is getting to a high level.

I think we are crossing the tipping point now, and COVID cases are beginning their final decline.

If Pfizer and Moderna are kept in the deep freeze (especially cold, dry ice-like temperatures), I think they are good for more than a year. Once they are defrosted for use, they are very perishable. The J&J is supposed to be quite stable, in a regular refrigerator.

“you are going to begin seeing vaccine doses discarded increasingly more often and in much greater numbers because of not having been administered before use by dates.”

I think that before valuable (bulk) vaccines are allowed to expire in inventory, they will be exported to other needy countries.

When AstraZeneca was delayed in the USA for additional study, a few million doses that had already been manufactured, and were sitting in inventory, were sent to Mexico and Canada for their use.

There is certainly going to be some variable wastage at the retail level, but at the wholesale level, in the millions of doses, that inventory will be managed around expiration dates.

Over the next couple of months, we are scheduled to receive a flood of additional vaccine supply. Surplus should become the norm. Pfizer and Moderna alone are contracted to provide enough for every man, woman and child in the Country by the end of June.

Demand does seem to have peaked already, and first shots are back down around a million per day this last week, from the two million per day that they had gotten up to.
