Two finance companies have agreed to waive balances on outstanding dog leases in Massachusetts to settle allegations that they illegally leased dogs in the state, Attorney General Maura Healey said Thursday.
Although legal in some states, dog leases are prohibited in Massachusetts.
In some states, pet stores may offer the option of leasing as an alternative way to finance a dog, similar to car leasing. Under a lease arrangement, the consumer must make monthly payments to the finance company for the duration of the lease. To buy the dog at the end of the lease, the consumer must make yet another payment to the finance company to finally own the dog.
If a family misses a payment, the dog can be repossessed, just like a leased car.
Credova Financial, LLC and Nextep Holdings, LLC, both based in Nevada, will waive more than $126,000 in balances, and transfer full ownership of dozens of dogs to Massachusetts consumers.

Sounds like a win-win.
I might have to move back to Massachusetts. I hate having to put my dog on a lease.
The guy that trained my german shepherd used to maintain about a dozen shepherds himself that he would take every night and place in the fenced in areas at car lots. Pretty lucrative gig.
