A 12-year-old in North Carolina used the downtime he had during the pandemic to take on a few extra classes in school.
Now, one year later, Mike Wimmer, of Salisbury, is getting ready to graduate high school and college -- in the same week.
Wimmer completed four years of school in one year -- two years of high school and a two-year associate's degree. He will graduate from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on May 21, and from Concord Academy High School on May 28, where he is valedictorian.
But this wasn't always Wimmer's plan, he said.
The student was taking dual enrollment classes and realized that at the pace he was going, he just needed a few more classes to get his associate's degree by his high school graduation.
He said his GPA at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is 4.0, while his high school GPA is 5.45.
A love of robotics
Despite being several years younger than his classmates, Wimmer said he gets along well with them -- and was even nominated to Homecoming Court last year.
Wimmer, who has an interest in robotics, told CNN that he's "the math and science guy." He's always had an affinity for technology -- he got his first iPad when he was 18 months old, and wondered how it worked.

I CAME TO REALIZE THAT HS HAD ONLY TWO PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS. ACCUSTOM US ALL TO GET UP EARLY, AND TO STAND QUIETLY IN LINE. I DID NEITHER WELL. I FOUND IT TO BE HORRIFICALLY TORTUROUS, INSANELY INHUMANE EVEN, TO PUT HUNDREDS OF BOYS AND GIRLS (WE ONLY HAD TWO CHOICES IN THOSE DAYS)IN THE THROES OF THEIR RAGING HORMONES FOR 8 HRS., OR MORE, A DAY AND STRICTLY ENFORCE, WITH A VENGEANCE, THE PRIME DIRECTIVE: “THOU SHALT NOT TOUCH!” (AT LEAST IN MY TIME. UNIVERSITY IS GOOD ALSO FOR JUST TWO THINGS. ACCESS TO EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT IF YOU’RE A STEM STUDENT, AND CONTACTS.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS WORTHLESS...EXCEPT FOR GENDER STUDIES, OF COURSE.
MY EDUCATION (OTHER THAN THE HYPOCRISIES I SAW IN HS AND COLLEGE) BEGAN AT THE END OF MY SOPHOMORE YEAR OF UNIVERSITY, WHEN I QUIT AND ENLISTED IN THE ARMY.
SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT RIGHT OUT OF HS! EVERY ABLE BODIED MALE SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO SERVE FOR 2 YEARS RIGHT OUT OF HS AND IT WOULDN’T HURT FEMALES AS WELL...BUT NOT IN A COED MILITARY! NEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING MORE STUPID IN MY LIFE!

Honors and AP classes count for extra points because they are more advanced.
Ordered this based on Military Tech. Don’t need the music, I quit listening to all but old stuff like RUSH did when he went deaf. New stuff sounds funky, and they don’t know how to balance music with voice. At a certain point it becomes Painful.

I disagree- My daughter was a ‘problem child’ with her peers in high school- but interacted quite well with adults.
When taught by them she excelled- so hanging out with 20 somethings rather than other 12 year-olds was beneficial for her.
