‘This was an execution’: North Carolina man killed by deputies was shot in back of head, attorneys say

Attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter watched a 20-second portion of body camera video with Brown’s family. Lassiter said Brown did not appear to be a threat to officers as he backed his vehicle out of his driveway and tried to drive away from deputies with guns drawn.

When asked whether Brown was shot in the back, attorney Harry Daniels said, “Yes, back of the head.”

An eyewitness account and emergency scanner traffic had previously indicated Brown was shot in the back as he tried to drive away.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten II has said that multiple deputies fired shots. Seven deputies are on leave pending a probe by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Earlier Monday, a search warrant was released that indicated investigators had recorded Brown selling small amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine to an informant. Crump argued that authorities were trying to release negative information about Brown while shielding themselves by holding back the video.

The search warrant said investigators believed Brown was storing drugs in the home or two vehicles. The document, which indicated the search was not completed, did not list anything found.

Two arrest warrants released last week charged him with possession with intent to sell and deliver 3 grams of each of the drugs.

Police have to remember that surveillance is everywhere, ESPECIALLY when they wear body cams. Don’t like that they need to change jobs.

I must not have an updated copy of the rules.

Mine doesn’t say the cops have to let me leave if they want to arrest me.

This guy doesnt have color of law arguments to back what he was doing. And usually if youdo, you still want to stay alive for the impending lawsuit.

Back of the head, as he was driving away. That sounds bad.

How can he be a fleeing felon when he hasn’t even been arrested yet much less convicted?

Reading the article, it isn't clear, but it does NOT sound like he was driving away. It seems like they are playing word games.

Brown did not appear to be a threat to officers as he backed his vehicle out of his driveway and tried to drive away from deputies with guns drawn.

It sounds like he might have been "backing out of his driveway", and there were officers behind his car who opened fire. It doesn't say he WAS driving away. Either way, I'll wait to see the video. If the suspect/victim was driving away from the officers, then there will be criminal charges. If he was backing toward them, probably not. Either way, expect mostly peaceful looting and rioting.

“IF he’s a meth dealer that fits the threat to the citizenry.”

Does not meet the legal definition of “imminent threat”

IMHO it does. Meth is deadly addictive and is an imminent threat to the country.

When I was young there was a Fleeing Felon Rule, at least here".

In Florida—same here.

MORE than any one person, Janet Reno precipitated today's major crimes.

Penetration shots to the eye band are much more efficient.

If you’ve got seven or eight cops drawing down on you, and you cross the threshold for use of lethal force, you’re going to get shot by seven or eight cops, and they’re going to shoot you until the threat ceases. It’s not a matter of one setting the others off, if they’re properly trained.

“as he tried to drive away” That little detail makes the headline misleading.

In many jurisdictions, fleeing the police to avoid arrest is a felony. Bad things happen to people in the commission of felonies. Burglary is a felony. How many burglars get shot?
