OK, God... Why do parrots and turtles live to 100 and dogs to 14?

I lost my best friend...

15 years ago I was divorced. My friends and family sided with my ex. My two daughters haven't talked to me since.

Shortly after the divorce, I adopted a 10-week-old labradoodle puppy, Bentley. Since that time, we have been inseparable, having crossed the country twice and spending every day together since that time.

He became my best and at times only friend. Once during a hike in the back hills, he saved me from a wild cat attack. He froliced with me during the happy times and provided me comfort during the sad ones. He may not have understood, but he always listened, cocking his head, lifting his ears and staring me in my eyes.

He gave me purpose and a reason to carry on during the rough times.

I had to let go of my friend last week. The saddest day of my life and the most difficult thing I had to do. The last time I cried was 9 years ago when my mother died. This time it is worse...perhaps because as a believer in the soul, I trust I will see my mother again. But my dog? He must, I pray, have a soul, for I saw the way he treated me and those who met him. He was a loving animal, unconditional. I only hope he will greet me at the pearly gates.

And when it's my turn, the first thing I will ask God is why do damn turtles and parrots live to be 100, and loving faithful dogs only 14?

He's got some explaining to do.

Sad sorry and I am truly sorry for your loss and pain I’ve known to often myself.

But if you get there before me please ask him why cows have 4 teats and typically have only 1 calf but goats have just 2 teats and can regularly have 3 or 4 kid goats. I only ask because I have raised both and bottle feeding baby goats is not fun.

As an owner of many parrots, cockatiels, and lovebirds, when you have a companion bird who bonds with you, they're all about you and give you plenty of love.

Not exactly like a dog, but they love you up in their own way, and when they go it's very hard.

That said, it's hard to lose a beloved canine. I've lost many and still grieve about some of them.

Well it is wonderful to think God gave you such a wonderful dog to spend your life with. I believe a dog’s greatest desire is to be Loved and Cherished: Mission Accomplished!!

I write this as I am counting the days. Sammie the Schnoodle is 20 years old. He still loves his little life, although yesterday he developed a limp. I do have a doggie stroller I just bought, just incase. I pray a lot at night, I am sleep deprived. He has doggie dementia. I ask God to give me wisdom and help Sammie that he would have peace and rest through the night.

Be Blessed, You were loved by a Dog!!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m dreading the day when my furbaby passes. He’s going to be 19 in October, not sure he’s going to make it, he’s got doggie dementia, but, he still brings me joy. Remember the good times and ask Bentley to send you a furbaby who needs love and attention. You’ll be glad you did.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I know how you must feel. Two weeks ago I had to say goodbye to my little buddy, an 18 year-old Pek-a-Poo. I think that’s a Pekinese/Poodle mix. He wasn’t even my dog but we spent so much time together over the past 9 years we had a strong bond. His owner left him with me for months at a time and even when he was around, I took the little guy for a walk every week day while his owner was at work.

Yeah, I cried a little too. Grizzled old DAV that I am, I still tear up just thinking about it.

I don’t care what any church has to say on the matter. Dogs have souls.

No problem.

I also found a turtle crossing the road and felt so bad when I passed it that I turned around and picked it up so it would become someones fun to squish it.

Turns out it was an aquatic turtle and I have spent well over $1,000 on tanks and other accessories plus hours cleaning it’s tank. Only to find out it will out live me as well. Then what? My only hope is to have enough time before my time comes that I can release it in the irrigation ditch across the street.
