Police shortage: Cops retiring in droves, 'recruiting crisis,' applications 'historically low'

Following the "defund the police" movement and the "abolish the police" movement, constant negative coverage of law enforcement by the media, anti-police sentiment becoming mainstream, and the threat of riots have contributed to a police shortage across the country.

The Philadelphia Police Department currently has 268 vacancies and is expecting even more shortages in the near future.

"From Jan. 1 through Thursday, 79 Philadelphia officers have been accepted into the city's Deferred Retirement Option Program, meaning they intend to retire within four years, according to Mayor Jim Kenney's office," the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. "During the same time period last year, just 13 officers had been accepted into the program, the office said."

Neighboring New Jersey is facing a "recruiting crisis," according to Pat Colligan, president of the New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association.

Col. Patrick Callahan, the acting superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, said the state's largest police agency received a "historically low" number of applications this year. In some years, the New Jersey State Police would usually receive between 15,000 to 20,000 applications – this year they only received 2,023 qualified applicants as of Thursday, according to NJ.com.

The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 said there were "recruitment and retention issues," which prompted the "topic of closing police district(s)."

"Our Patrol numbers are now below 700 officers which is about 300-400 below what is needed," the Baltimore FOP said, according to WBFF-TV. "This creates huge safety issues for our officers and for the citizens of Baltimore."

The “woke” police will turn into Ferguson Effect cops in a hurry.

They will work in super slow motion, make sure not to show up anywhere where an active shooter or criminal is still in the area.

Cops then become stenographers.

“What happened here?”

FORBES -At Least 13 Cities Are Defunding Their Police Departments:*

At least 13 U.S. cities have cut funding from police department budgets or decreased officer numbers with several more in the process. As of last August: 2020/08/13/

Austin, Texas, was the latest city to announce a police defunding effort, with the City Council on Thursday voting unanimously to cut $150 million (roughly one third) from the police budget

Austin’s announcement closely follows the sweeping budget change approved by Seattle—a $3.5 million budget cut . The country’s two largest cities, New York and Los Angeles, approved budget cuts weeks after protests began—New York slashed $1 billion from its $5.6 billion operating budget while Los Angeles approved a $150 million budget cut from its budget. Also in California, San Francisco approved a $120 million cut to the police and sheriff’s department.*

Democrats are making everyone’s families less safe except for their Dem elites with their own protection forces.

What will the Super Rich Elites, do when their blue city mayors replace their city cops with Sharia Muslims and other social workers with BLMers/Antifas?

Those Elites will hire our unemployed and well trained former Special Ops people and former tough cops. Who are no longer wanted in our worthless SJW/PC military and Blue Cities.

When hired, these new non cops will handle any protection issues their super rich Elites might need 24/7. That will include special preventive action as well as ‘neutralizing’, when needed.

These former special ops and former tough cops in their new areas of action, will operate, react and control/end any issues without any problems from so called local cops/DA’s, mayors and the local mediots in the local media.

The blue city mayors and city council members will welcome these Special People, while slashing their own city police budgets and eliminating their regular police. Their costs will be minimized and their budgets will be balanced.

How many mayors/governors in Blue States/Cities would get rid of their police forces in a New York minute, if they were not opposed by their elites, who control them????

These former special ops and tough former cops might even protect members of Congress from Deploreables if they are needed like on 6 January, this year in our capitol building in DC.

“...with the City Council on Thursday voting unanimously to cut $150 million (roughly one third) from the police budget...”

It’s what the voters wanted. Hell I’d have voted for the cut too....just so the voters would suffer!😎

Apparently defunding not needed. Just have the city admins refuse to back the LEO agency and they popo will bail out on their own.

The owner of the late, lamented Second City Cop blog made a similar statement on another blog about the Chicago Police. Retirements in the coming months are in the hundreds, others are leaving on their own, and even after lowering standards and sending invites to previous rejects there are fewer than a hundred replacements in the Academy pipeline.

I’ve also noticed that many of the surrounding suburbs and counties have standing “lateral transfer” openings for active police.

I’m wondering what retention statistics are looking like for the Guard...there’s gotta be at least a few guarding Fort Pelosi thinking “I didn’t sign up for this”.

I’ve also noticed that many of the surrounding suburbs and counties have standing “lateral transfer” openings for active police.

And even with lateral transfer openings, many suburbs cannot fill their open positions.

Where I live there used to be a waiting list of potential candidates for open LEO positions. Now? Nothing.

My oldest son, a graduate of WIU with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement (graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2019) quit his job last Friday after less than a year on the job.

His reason was sound and clear, and I was happy he did it. This state doesn't deserve law enforcement officers after stripping them all of Qualified Immunity. Who in their right mind would want to be a LEO anywhere in Illinois when they can be sued personally for anything & everything on the job?

No one in their right mind would jeopardize their or their family's financial well being for a bunch of a-holes who voted Democrat here.

Well, cops only support government positions so I am not for more of them.
