I raised 4 sons, but I never felt the need to use vulgar terms with them relating the male anatomy.

I was naively ignorant of those terms. I did not use them with my sons to teach them about or discuss their anatomy. I did not allow them to speak that way in front of me and taught them proper, acceptable, polite behavior. However, they were much better prepared for ‘the world’ than was I. And, as adults, they appreciate the realm of humor.
