Newsreels are just that. They certainly would not film the ghettos or slums. Yes they existed in the 30’s , 40’s and beyond to this very day.
But you can turn on the info box (tv) and watch those commercials where everyone is sporting the latest fashions, car, perfect house etc. And to some extent those things are out there in the real world.

No, we haven’t always been. Maybe in some pockets or areas of the country, or in poor rough neighborhoods, but not the country as a whole.
But there are oldsters like me who actually remember what it was like and can see how our society has coarsened. Yes, there have always been ill-behaved people and always will be, but there was a time that people aspired to be respectable. Sadly, there are many who think it is great to be as vulgar as possible.
