someone came up and swung at me with a knife when i was repossessing a car...

Minor point - two shot Tasers are a thing these days, but sometimes Tasers just do not work *at all* on people. There is a certain percentage of the population whose nervous and neural systems simply are not affected at all by a Taser. You can get a good shot with a working module, the needles stick properly in the skin... and nothing happens when current is applied.

Of course, the officer should respond by first asking the stabber what his/her/its preferred pronouns are so that he/she/it can be addressed sensitively and respectfully.

The interesting wrinkle in all of this is that the Supreme Court has already ruled that the police do not have a duty to protect.

So the cop stepping in to prevent you from being killed is an option.
