The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday is set to approve, for the second time in less than a year, legislation making the District of Columbia the 51st state in a move sure to further inflame tensions between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.

The population of Washington, D.C. is heavily Democratic. As a state, it likely would elect two Democratic senators, potentially changing the balance of power in the Senate, which now has 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans.

If we still had a Constitution they would need an amendment.

This must be another example of how it doesn’t matter whether Republicans or Democrats are in control.

True ... and it would require a Constitutional amendment to actually begin the process. But to the Democrat/Left, the Constitution can be amended by a mere executive order. Let’s see if the Roberts USSC will then honor their oaths to “preserve, protect and defend” our Consitution from those who’s objective is to destroy it.

In a sane world, this would require repeal of the 23rd amendment. But we don’t live in a sane country anymore.

They may need to pack the supreme court first.

Does this not require 3/2 of the other states vote?... DC should just be reabsorbed in to the state they were cut from...Let DC votes as part of Virginia and Maryland

The plan is to make the national mall area the capital so that the city of D.C. can be a state. I am not a lawyer but according to the constitution a state can not be made from another and since D.C. was part of Maryland I don’t know how it would be legal.

The proper way to make DC a state is by Constitutional amendment, but as we know, that would take too long, and would meet too much opposition. Instead, just like everything else, they want to ram this down our throats.

Nope. Approval of both houses of Congress is all that's needed.

BS.

I'm pretty sure the court has already been packed.

Article IV, Section 3: "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

Yup. It will pass by simple majority and ho'jo will sign it into "law", at which point the supremes (spit) will either rule that none of the other states have standing, or that because the unconstitutional deed is already performed, the matter is moot.

Sort of the way leftists get to murder people now. "Hey, the victim's dead and nothing can bring them back, no point in punishing the murderer now."

No it wouldn't. Congress can carve off part of the current D.C., call it the "Capitol District", and make a state out of the rest.

For territories. Washington D.C. is prohibited in the Constitution from being a state. If the Constitution matters anymore.

The Constitution requires a separate "Capitol District". It mandates the maximum size but does not specify a minimum size. Congress can carve out the White House, Capitol, and related office buildings into a new Capitol District and make a state out of the rest.

A state cannot be made from another state without the consent of the legislature of that state. Since D.C. doesn't have a legislature then either the City Council or Congress will act in that regard.
