The reality is we don't have to make "excuses" for our Founders the way they have to make excuses for theirs - we've been forced into it by the work historians have done to us over the last 120 years in omitting and propaganda.
Historians cannot be trusted and this issue more than any other puts the point on that fact. They have been the ones driving this narrative since the 1980s.

Planned Parenthood is still racist. They were caught on a recorded phone call saying that they’d gladly accept a donation from an “admitted” racist who wanted to target his contribution to black neighborhoods to help pay for abortions. They were even willing to target his contribution.
Good writing skills of the writers of past was a product of their time. I personally have not talked "to the Founders" though I may have talked "of the Founders".

There’s no need to be an apologist for the Founders. They were on the correct side of history.

The Founding Moment was unique, but the Founders transcended it by applying the lessons of 3,000 years of history to their day and ours.
