I was asking for any half dollars in the till during the Great Recession. I could spot silver ones pretty easily. Kid working the register took out a Franklin half, gave it a good look and said “That’s a funny color.”

Sounds like the cashier could have taken the bill and given her change for $100 and she wouldn’t have known the difference. But the attempted theft was OK, because they were making “care packages for the homeless”.
How can anyone be arrested for intended philanthropy? LOL

Well, a million dollars now isn’t worth what it was 50 years ago, and the million dollar bill should have been enough to purchase some candy and toilet paper and milk; not much else.

What's not funny about this situation is that someday in the not too distant future, the U.S. 1 million dollar bill will be in circulation due to the overprinting of U.S. fiat dollars.
Just look at Zimbabwe and their $100,000,000,000,000 note. Yes, that's One Hundred Trillion, and it was in circulation in 2008. With it you could buy a loaf of bread.

Making change from one register at the Dollar General might have been a problem.
.................................................
DG couldn’t make change for a million dollar bill if they emptied out the registers of every store in Tennessee. What was the lady attempting to purchase, a pack of chewing gum?
