Football fans' fury at 'greedy' American billionaires and banks trying to 'tear up the beautiful game' as Boris vows to BLOCK England's 'Big Six' clubs' bid to form new European Super League

Boris Johnson today vowed to make sure the proposed European Super League 'doesn't go ahead' as fans and football royalty turned on the 'greedy' mainly-foreign billionaire club owners trying to force through the hated £4.3billion plan bankrolled by a US investment bank.

The Prime Minister has said the clubs, which include Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, 'must answer to their fans' before launching the 'very damaging' change.

This attempt to create a Pan-European league seems to come out every few years. As an outsider, I would rather watch Chelsea going up against Bayern on a regular basis instead of West Ham.

There may be nothing nefarious going on. I think what you’re seeing with all these major sports leagues is an inevitable consequence that happens whenever a sport has completely saturated a market and exhausted all options for generating more revenue from its original fan base.

Every one of these sports destroyed itself once it got away from what made it popular for traditional fans and tried to make itself popular among casual fans or even among people who don’t give a damn about sports. I would cite the NHL and NASCAR as perfect examples of this.

You can add that the structure of national soccer leagues worldwide is definitely not along the American model. Here, leagues are single organizations that use monopoly power to shake down taxpayers, especially at the city and state level, and media organizations. No team can leave without consent of the other owners, nor would it wish to the way the money rolls in.

In soccer, in contrast, teams have their own history and corporate identity, they band together when it’s useful — as in the English Premiership — but leave when it’s useful too. And so team owners can go their own way if they wish.

FIFA or UEFA can sanction teams that go their own way, but for the biggest teams it isn’t always enough.

Tottenham have sacked Jose Mourinho after 17 months in charge, the club have confirmed.

Spurs announced the decision on Monday morning, less than 12 hours after confirming they will be founding members of a new European Super League alongside five other English clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

One great thing about English soccer is the relegation system, with teams being promoted into and demoted out of the top tier every year. Too bad the major US pro sports leagues do not have such a system. This Super League with its permanent members appears to run against that. But can you really expect billionaire owners to risk the value of their clubs if they don’t have to?

Now every European team looks the same. The traditions are gone. The working class has been priced out, and it’s all corporatized as is all big sports these days.

Westham is actually lying 4th on the Premier League table right now, higher then Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton, and Arsenal.
And who football clubs decide to play is none of the Prime Minister's business.
