The NBA has suffered another ratings disaster, with ABC falling 45 percent since the 2011-12 season, while TNT was down 40 percent, and ESPN was off 20 percent.
This ratings tumble is nothing new, granted. The past two NBA finals each have fallen one over the other, with last year’s down 51 percent to all-time low for the championships. The worst was the final game, off nearly 70 percent year-over-year.
So far, the average viewership for the league’s games is only 2.83 million, according to The Athletic. For comparison, recent episodes of the NBC crime drama, The Blacklist, average about 3.3 million viewers, while one of ABC’s biggest shows, medical drama, The Good Doctor, averages just over four million per week. Historically, sports out earns any regular TV series.
The NBA’s collapse may not be surprising in light of recent polls finding that basketball fans feel that the league has become far too wrapped up in politics.
In September, a Harris poll found that 39 percent of respondents who identified as sports fans felt that the NBA had become too political, and 19 percent said that they had turned off pro basketball because of the NBA’s deep links to China.
In 2020, the NBA’s coronavirus season in the bubble launched with heavy-handed paeans to the anti-American Black Lives Matter agenda. But reactions to those displays of leftism may have alarmed NBC Commissioner Adam Silver because the league boss claimed that this season would dispense with the more overt displays of support for BLM.
“My sense is there’ll be somewhat a return to normalcy, that those messages will largely be left to be delivered off the floor. And, I understand those people who are saying, ‘I’m on your side, but I want to watch a basketball game,'” Silver said last October.

This was easy. Thugs on the court basically gave the bird to the audience who bought the tickets to watch them play. I guess they don't want money.

Nope, Fascist Corporations are fine paying the fees to market their wares during these children game telecasts. Until true American are willing to walk the walk and stop buying their products it’s all talk.
I have no doubt there is a big opportunity for a organized effort to market boycotts of these fascist corporations. It just needs a recognized face / organizer to kick start it.

3-Point shot killed basketball. Anyone can be a good three-point shooter with enough practice.
Try threading a pass for an easy dunk or layup, now that takes skill.

Yep, good point. I forgot that one. But that raises an interesting question: How does the NBA think it is going to woo (Wu?) the Chicoms with a game now built around inner city black culture, when the Chinese absolutely hate blacks?
point: we are giving up sports ball, sports they we played and loved our whole lives never to return, but... we are also teaching our young to avoid the wokeball games and they will never love a game that spits on them/their values and on and on.
sportsballs just might of lost the next few generations unless that actually DO wake up.

My wife and I have been fans of pro sports for many years. We haven’t watched a game in a couple of years. We are both still Boxing Fans. We continue to be, as Boxing has not exhibited any Woke Politics.
Neither of us is MMA fans. It just smacks a bit too much of the WWE for our liking. We used to attend a few NASCAR races because of the atmosphere. It’s like a huge Tailgate Party but, since NASCAR went Woke we stopped going. We have substituted NASCAR for Horse Racing. No Wokeness there. Yet.
Yet our police who protect our lives are subjected to hatred and violence (a growing number of them even killed) while making a tiny fractions of the money awarded to NBA players. I would not miss the NBA. But I cannot imagine living in a community with no police.
If the team owners really start panicking, they’ll ask for a few surviving icons to call us ‘racist’ or ‘closeminded’ for rejecting their voice. People like Kareem Abdul Jabar, Michael Jordan, Magic Jackson. They still won’t get it, till it’s too late. I see Larry Bird is still around, all 6ft, 9in of him. Maybe he’ll have something to say too.
