(Vanity) Justice Clarence Thomas Wrote Me Back
Me | 4/18/2021 | thefactor

Posted on 04/18/2021 3:37:47 PM PDT by thefactor

I think this is a nice topic for Sunday evening, and some of you may find it interesting.

In October 2020 I wrote Justice Thomas a note after I completed his book. I was unaware of his struggles growing up, and I expressed my thanks to him for his continuing efforts in supporting the Constitution. I also asked him for some reading recommendations.

I recently received a lovely handwritten note from the Justice himself. Here are his recommendations:

"A Conflict of Visions" by Sowell, "The Tempting of America" by Bork, "Cynical Theories" by Pluckrose and Lindsay, and any book by Paul Johnson. Justice Thomas said he is currently re-reading Johnson's "Modern Times".

Needless to say I was thrilled to receive such a thoughtful response from Justice Thomas and I will be framing this correspondence. In my humble opinion, Clarence Thomas is a living legend.

How cool is that? A hand-written note from the greatest living Justice! A real treasure to pass down the generations!

I got to meet Justice Thomas about 30 years ago, when he was a new justice. I was part of a small group of law students from the University of Virginia - all members of the Federalist Society - and we made a trip every year to meet a different justice friendly to the Society.

It was an informal setting, and everyone was asking him very legalistic questions that he really couldn't answer because of they involved pending issues. Finally, he says jokingly "does anyone have a question I can answer?" I noticed he was a pretty sturdy guy, so I asked him what was his max in the bench press.

Hey, at least it was a question he could answer.

Very cool. Justice Thomas seems to be the real deal. I had the opportunity to briefly meet him nearly 30 years ago, less than two years after his confirmation process (headed by some horse’s ass in the Senate). Literally nothing has shaken that first good impression. Justice Thomas is as awesome as we all think he is.

“The Tempting of America” is a MUST read for anyone who studies the Constitution.

“I asked him what was his max in the bench press.”

That’s awesome. Wish I had thought of that. I just asked him how he was enjoying our campus, and how he managed as a conservative in a liberal world. You probably got a more memorable answer!

It gave me a smile from ear to ear. I’d frame that reply.
Justice Thomas is a bulwark, a principled, thoughtful, wise and tenacious man. We need him now, more then ever. He has been increasingly speaking out in defend of the Constitution and the rule of law.

Actually, he said he just went for reps rather than max, so he didn't know his max.

But the question alone made me a hero with my lifting buddies at school.

Back in the early 2000s, I wrote Allen West expressing good luck for his House run in FL. We went back and forth a couple times. Nice.Friggin.Guy

Most certainly. He and the late Antonin Scalia were two on my bucket list of ones I want to meet.

I wish we could have five Thomases and four Alitos. That would be a well composed Court.
