Flashing objects photographed buzzing over US warships could be hypersonic drones from Russia or China, according to a UFO expert.
The photos from California were said to have been leaked from an official investigation into unidentified flying objects which was readying evidence for the US Congress due in June.
Nick Pope, who carried out investigations into UFOs for the Ministry of Defence, has speculated that one of the US's main rivals could be behind the incident.
He also believes that this was not an isolated incident and that there may well be other UFO sightings that have not been made public.
But he added the US government might not know who's behind it all as the mystery deepens, the Sun Online reports.
Mr Pope told the site: "The clue here is that in 2019 the US Navy issued guidance to its pilots (the details are classified), telling them what to do if they encounter UFOs.
"This implies we're dealing with more than just a few isolated incidents.
"Secondly, I'm sure the US military intelligence community knows more about all this than they're saying publicly."

Last month The Drive reported that US Navy warships had been swarmed by six aircraft described as 'performing brazen manoeuvres' over the warships near a sensitive military training range.
During the incident in July 2019 none of the warships were reportedly able to identify the drones and the incident has baffled witnesses.
Recently it was reported that the US has a stack of secret evidence showing UFOs doing things that have defied explanation.
These include breaking the sound barrier without creating a sonic boom, and carrying out manoeuvres which are impossible with human technology.

Good scare headline, but they weren’t moving at hypersonic speeds.
Ministry of Defense? Does this group originate from Russia or China.
Surely the communist regime of Amerika would only have to use DOD instead of a Cold War communist org. This failed experiment is brazen and to say the least do not work for the people.
My Country is TEXAS!
During one cruise off the Eastern seaboard during 2014, there were daily encounters for weeks.
‘Wow, What Is That?’ Navy Pilots Report Unexplained Flying Objects
"The strange objects, one of them like a spinning top moving against the wind, appeared almost daily from the summer of 2014 to March 2015, high in the skies over the East Coast. Navy pilots reported to their superiors that the objects had no visible engine or infrared exhaust plumes, but that they could reach 30,000 feet and hypersonic speeds.
“These things would be out there all day,” said Lt. Ryan Graves, an F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot who has been with the Navy for 10 years, and who reported his sightings to the Pentagon and Congress. “Keeping an aircraft in the air requires a significant amount of energy. With the speeds we observed, 12 hours in the air is 11 hours longer than we’d expect.”
Graves and more than at least a dozen other pilots from that cruise have testified to Congress in closed-door hearings.
There are stories like this out there
https://www.militaryaerospace.com/sensors/article/14186795/hypersonic-drones-missile-defense
But given that the media is supposed to research stories, and the above is out there a google search away, why would the story be presented in outlet after outlet as a strange, spooky, and inexplicable thing with no mention of the Northrop Grumman drones that are a matter of public record?
I think the media got a lot wrong and they are trying to figure out how people confront a lack of information in increasingly vapid news broadcasts.
This is about the most plausible thing I’ve heard yet - all the UFO stuff is for idiots.
If it was China they wouldn’t be wasting time/money on stealth and carriers.
C’mon, man!
Either China or Russia could send drones to the WH for a buzz and Biden and the Pentagon would turn over the keys.
And they're not ours or the Pentagon would have gotten a message to the Senate Select Committee for Intelligence to cool its jets...they're not a threat (because--wink, wink--they're ours but we're not ready for the big reveal just yet).
The global warming fraud is not working. We need an alien invasion fraud to make us clamor for a world government to address the issue.
In fact, even if it is aliens (from another world or another dimension), we can expect the Elites, Globalists, and communists to clamor for the position of Plantation Earth overseer.
Sadly true. As to the article, consider elimination of mass is all that is necessary to make all the maneuvers we see possible. All that is needed is a hologram. Holograms of this type are probably within our capabilities. While eliminating the effects of mass is almost certainly not.
But why leak these stories and videos to the public?
I’ll play! We leak carefully crafted stories precisely because servicemen talk. The ‘word’ will get out anyway. So you leak a vague conspiracy theory first so that anybody with ‘real knowledge’ can be immediately discredited (because arrests and courts-martial are so messy).
Incidentally, the USAF Project Blue Book was great for covering up covert aircraft projects. Worked so well, the Russians were taking UFO’s seriously while we were overflying them with U-2’s.
What’s the fascination that UFOs have with the US Navy?
What’s the fascination that UFOs have with the US Navy?
Theory: Because of US advances in low-observable drone aircraft, the USN is increasing the sensitivity of their installed SPY-1D Aegis shipboard radar systems. The reports we are seeing about UFO’s are the ‘noise’ that the radars are picking up in the raw data. Same goes for the new ASEA radars on the Navy’s F/A-18E/F fighters. They’re picking up ghosts.
Agreed!
More likely then hot rodding aliens !
They will try anything and use anything. C’mon man!
Thanks. So they’re not aliens?
Noise? Ghosts?
One of the drones maintained a hovering position over the ship's helicopter pad.
Was that "noise" or a "ghost"?

Ships bridge logs don’t really give very much other than visual sightings passed to the bridge of presumed UAV’s. There’s no indication that radar picked up anything. Rather than confirm the object the destroyers did something interesting... they limited their electronic emissions. Almost like they didn’t want to get additional confirmation as to size, speed & heading of their aerial target. Curious. An actual radar plot would have been useful.
As you say, it is quite curious.
That said, I have no idea what is going on, but it appears that these reports dovetail with the Pentagon report due to be submitted soon to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
