The yearlong aggression of orca pods against boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal continues unabated.
By October of last year, there were 33 bizarre "revenge" attacks by killer whales off the coast of Spain and Portugal and it seems they’re not done yet.
A video taken by fishermen in the Straights of Gibralter on April 3 shows the men valiantly fighting off a pod of the angry sea mammals as they attack the boat and break its rudder.
In a video published by The Daily Mail, the captain, Antonio Busse, 40, is seen fighting off the orcas with a pole while screaming at them to "piss off!" "Mamma Mia!" and "get off the (bleeping) boat!"
Other crew members are seen throwing items into the water to try and frighten away the angry pod of four, to no avail, and one large killer whale can be seen swimming underneath the boat — causing the crew to scream in fear. Another video shows the orcas threateningly circling the boat and breaching the surface nearby.

Weird. I have read that Orcas are one of the smartest marine animals. But, that’s wild.
Strangely I am terrified of Orcas. Sharks somewhat. But Orcas are massive and can be quite aggressive. I don’t scuba dive but I never would for this chief reason.
When Orcas come around you’ll notice the great whites leave - very quickly.

Jaysus! That picture of the Whalers gives me nightmares! Not only do I HATE open water, I also hate all of the evil things underneath said water that want to eat me alive!
Kind of funny, though. My ancestors were English whalers! I have a whale tooth that has been passed down through the family for for-ever. It measures 11” long. No scrimshaw on it, though. ;)
I just saw a story about that a couple of days ago. They showed pictures of GW carcasses with their livers removed in a surprisingly delicate manner by orcas.
Their was a whole hour documentary on Nat Geo or Discovery a year ago discussing the Orcas eating the livers out of Great White sharks — that started in the waters off Washington State and British Columbia — not too many great whites there any way — and really NONE now after a multi-year campaign by the Orcas to systematically kill off the Great Whites by eating their livers...
And then the Orcas on the other side of the world (south of the Cape of Good Hope) started doing the same thing. There was a lot of speculation that given the intelligence of the Orcas, that perhaps a Great White eating one too many Orca calves has resulted in some form of “Final Solution” consensus and implementation among the Orcas.
Fascinating to think about.

In so far as we have populations of orcas with different behaviors, and a lack of intergroup mating despite contact, different coloration, and distict genetics, some biologists think there are two or more distinct extent speacies within the genus Orca, rather than subspecies.
There is no evidence of Orcas ever eating people or even targeting people. They are giant dolphins. But abused orcas in aquaria have killed trainers. One killed two.
