Our Dandie Dinmont, Dorie is fifteen now. She’s blind, coughs, and sleeps a lot, but still has an appetite. Just a matter of time. Her pups and mate are long gone. I wonder why we put ourselves through such grief. Kipling has a poem, “The Power of a Dog.”

With our Lucky, we had to watch her go in with the Vet Tech, F’ing COVID, That was in January, We adopted a Lab who was rescued as she was hauling a deer carcass out of the woods. She is a very sweet ald loony pup. You never replace a dog, your new pup just adds to the love...

Sorry you had to watch a tech take your dog in denying you a chance to soothe and calm them in their last moments. That had to hurt as bad as losing them.
It softened the blow a little being able to hug their neck and hold their head close in those final moments whispering only what they could hear. Separating you from the pup at that moment to me at least was cruel.
And yeah yeah, slobbering old fool sopping over a dog for chrissakes. I'm in my seventies, a combat vet and ex-cop and yes, losing someone that close can turn you into a blubbering mess. So What?

No, We couldn’t be with her. No family allowed. She had cancer. Beagle Shepherd mix, She was my buddy. We lost her sister (littermate) two years before. They were great, great dogs.
