Southern drawl is cotton states talk

Non southerners rarely understand this ...

I’m a westerner who moved to the South a few years ago. For nearly 60 years, I had never heard anyone say “I’m fixin’ to...”

Now I hear it multiple times a day here in Arkansas. Lol.

I'm a southerner who learned to speak northern in order to deal with big expense-account clients from New York, Philadelphia, DC and Boston. Many of them never suspected; and were horrified to learn I went "down there" and had actually eaten at Burger King or Cracker Barrel, or had shopped at Walmart. I learned to keep it to myself.

But one time a big client complained to me how much it had cost to have his BMW repaired, and I let slip a soft little, "Lord have mercy." He didn't understand what I said, and asked me to repeat it. Since he was not religious in any sense, I declined, but he insisted. So I enunciated it, but in "northern"—quiet, bland, and dry, like reading a financial report. He did not get the full, "LAWWWWD! Have MUSSY!" treatment—and thus will never really know, nor live.
