A high school in Oregon that was considering changing its mascot to that of an evergreen tree is delaying its vote over concerns about the image's potential ties to lynching.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School in Portland was renamed earlier this year after a prominent black activist and reporter who documented lynching.
The school had wanted to ditch its old Trojan mascot along with the name change and settled on the evergreen tree after input from students and staff who chose from among 420 possible choices.
A vote on the new mascot was set to take place last Tuesday but was halted after a director on the board shared concerns from the community over the tree's imagery with suggestions that a tree might conjure up reminders of lynching.
'I'm wondering if there was any concern with the imagery there, in using a tree … as our mascot? I think everyone comes with blind spots and I think that might've been a really big blind spot,' said Michelle DePass, Portland Public Schools Board of Education Director.
Another committee member said the issue had been brought up during the brainstorming process but stressed that evergreen trees were not typically associated with the barbaric act.
'We did talk about it, but we were looking at the symbolism more as a tree of life, than a tree of death,' said Martin Osborne, who is black, to the Portland Tribune. 'You could certainly take it either way, depending upon your position.'
Osborne said he believed the idea of using an evergreen as a mascot 'had nothing to do with the horrible history of lynching in the United States. Lynching trees typically are not evergreens.'

You beat me by 27 seconds...We both thought of Sanford...😀
Sanford University? Did you mean Sanford and Son University?
So trees are racist too? Nothing is too absurd anymore.
Alternately, they could be attention whores or they are trying to show that they have power and relevance.
In general, all these ‘triggered’ people are evil.
Insanity is not a pretty sight.
If trees were used to hang blacks, then all trees bad - even one which could not under any circumstance be use to hang anything more heavy than a Christmas ornament.
In that vein, since blacks were electrocuted in electric chairs, all chairs mush be shun and banned.
Why do all these people cater to 13% of the US population?
Are they also going to tear down all light poles, bridge supports, barn trusses for the same reason?
—
Roads gotta go too because they were used to transport a tiny minority of a minority to their untimely deaths.
Chairs were used to electrocute them, so chairs have to go as well.
The only thing hanged from an evergreen is Christmas bulbs. Lol
Are they also going to tear down all light poles, bridge supports, barn trusses for the same reason?

This is a pretty good insight how a progressive mind works. No reasoning, no rational thought, just “trees are racist”. They don’t understand the mechanics,so all trees are racist. Kinda the same with “all whites”.
Excellent point.
Why do all these people cater to 13% of the US population?
Because they see them as pets.
Electricity was used to electrocute...So electricity must be on the prohibited list as well...

My G.., pretty soon the muslims will have their wish and we will be back in the 7th century - all for liberals’ pets
lynching... have any of these useless eaters ever seen an evergreen?
Californians.
Hopefully they will use the Evergreen. I would love to see how they would place the noose and body on it. Maybe then the idiots would see how stupid their arguments are.
I thought lynching was most commonly associated with oak trees.
Yea. Nothing could be as woke as the Washington Football organization.
In the old days there were probably more whites lynched than blacks. It was Frontier Justice that WAS at times PLAIN WRONG. It was also a common theme back when they use to regularly make western movies.
