NFL’s Racist Past Has a Part in the Jones Versus Fields Debate

It's time to address the elephant in the room. Racism has helped Mac Jones' stock and hurt Justin Fields' in the lead-up to the draft. Yes, it really is happening.

Now before you freak out, take a breath, and keep reading because I don't mean what you likely think I mean. No, I don't think draft pundits are sitting at their keyboards and purposefully finding reasons to knock Fields while talking up Jones simply because of the color of their skin.

That would be what I would call blatant racism or conscious racism if you will. Racism has more nuance than that. There is such a thing as unconscious racism and every single person in this country has acted on it without realizing at one point or another.

Ok my friends I just knew it! You can't have a garden party without a turd in the punchbowl. I won't even finish reading the article. I'll just leave it up to you all. Our enemies will push all buttons but mine. Don't say you've quit watching the game over this stuff. The draft will be here in 29 days and the nation will be watching.

One guy is a National Champion. The other guy is not.

Every mobile QB in the NFL, at some point, becomes ‘not so mobile’. They can do things in college that they cannot do in the NFL. The game is just too different. IN the same way that the stud in high school isn’t much of a stud in college.

The coaches and scouts see things in a radically different way than the rest of us.

Both will be drafted. Let them get on the field to see who the better player is.

I don’t know what the controversy is, I don’t care. Every single time I hear “racism”, I turn it off, click somewhere else, turn the page. I’m beyond tired of this, and it now simply makes me angry.

No disclaimers, no saying I love this or that, but. To heck with it, anyone pimping victimhood due to racism is a cancer, and I hate them. Period.

Puh lease...
Justin Fields hurt his stock by his own inconsistent performance in the last conference games and the Championship game. Jones had 5 TD to Fields 1!!
Gimme a break. He’s doing well at tryouts now because he has to.

Racism has helped Mac Jones' stock and hurt Justin Fields' in the lead-up to the draft.

Kyle Shanahan, the coach of the 49ers, just traded away the team's next three first round picks to move from #12 in this year's draft to #3. He's going to take a QB, and who he picks will decide his future with the 49ers and probably as a head coach in the NFL. The idea that he gives a crap about the race of the guy he selects is absurd - he will take whoever he thinks can keep him employed the longest and get him back to the Super Bowl.

Same thing is true of every head coach and GM in the league - every one of them will pick whoever they think can keep them employed. They'll take white, black, blue, purple, green - just as long as the guy can go through his reads and complete a pass.

RD3, Johnny Manziel, Dwayne Haskins, Cardale Jones, Colin Kaepernick, and other “athletic”, mobile QB’s haven’t panned out or are constantly getting injured to be long term NFL QB’s. These so called mobile QB’s will run first at the sign of trouble instead of making their read progressions. If this writer would take off his race colored glasses and actually study the NFL he would know that pocket passers last longer and are far more effective pro QB’s than their more athletic counterparts. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger were/are pocket passers who played into their forties!

The best players are hired. Nothing racist about that. But hire the best in other professions and if too few blacks, women, queers, Asians, Hispanics are in the mix, it’s racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. Go figure.

Jones versus Fields? Fields is obviously the better athlete yet tries to be too precise. Jones has a dad bod yet approaches the game as a gunslinger. They are products of their coaching. Race has nothing to do with the choice. They both should be good NFL quarterbacms. The choice rests on what your team’s needs are.

Back when I cared about the NFL—and my home team won the Super Bowl on its home field, so if anything would have brought me back that would have done it...

Anyway, back when I cared, there was the year (2015) when the two top picks were Jameis Winston of one race and Marcus Mariota of the other. The discussions of which one would shine and which would flop were not laced with racism as everything everyone talks about these days is. However, the discussions turned out to be a waste, since both have become flops. Wouldn’t be surprising if 2021 is the same, but I won’t be watching to know, for I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.

I don’t think their failure rate is any different than the whites. My issue with any of them is when they get themselves into trouble for stupid stuff that sets the team back 4-5 years. Think Michael Vick, Steve McNair-not too smart. There’s also the Johnny Manzel’s and Ryan Leafs. Remember the Ohio State guy and the gambling? The racism thing might be the fear that a black given the reins to the organization will perform down to the level of what’s expected of him-on and off the field. Russell Wilson would be is an exception but like Obama he’s legally blonde. So what do you have? A while wuss writer giving his opinion of big dumb whitey. The answer is 3-5 years away so THEY can have fun with it.

Probably the biggest thing hurting Fields is that Dwayne Hawkins was such a bust. He seemed like a supreme talent. One has to try to evaluate whether the Ohio State system produces the results of the player.

I could make the same case for Mac Jones and the talent around him in the receiving core, though. How good is he really.
