Two-thirds of disease experts believe coronavirus variants will render vaccines ineffective within one year, a new survey finds.
Conducted by the People's Vaccine Alliance, about 66 percent of epidemiologists, virologists and infectious disease specialists say they think that within 12 months, the virus will mutate to such a degree that first-generation vaccines will be useless at preventing infection.
Of that group, nearly one-fifth believe it would occur within six months and one-third said within nine months. Fewer than one in eight doctors said they believed that mutations would never make the vaccines currently available ineffective.

We can’t know what it means to have a majority of experts sharing an opinion unless they tell us who those experts are. If you want to find out about general relativity, the majority of experts probably share an opinion but if Einstein isn’t one of them then I have doubts.
The “common cold” is actually caused by any of over 200 different viruses from several different families of virus. It’s not a single infection, but rather just a general set of respiratory symptoms we collectively refer to as a cold. Is it possible to make a vaccine against over 200 different viruses? Yes. Is it cost-effective? No. Because nobody’s going to spend $30,000 to not get a cold.
Influenza has multiple strains, each of which rapidly mutates independently. Second generation vaccines take months to construct, which means we’re months behind a rapidly mutating virus. That means it’s only 40-60% effective on average any given year. With the third generation (mRNA platform) vaccines, adjustments can be made in weeks, rather than months. COVID-19 is the first disease where an actual product on the mRNA platform has been produced, although there have been multiple companies working on the platform for decades now.
So in the future, we may actually be able to end Influenza. But probably not the “common cold”, because that’s over 200 different moving targets to hit.

Not for the platform itself. It’s a solid idea, which is why several major companies have been working on it to varying degrees for decades now. Everyone is aware that’s likely the future of medicine and vaccines.
The two existing authorized mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 have a stabilizer for the lipid (fat) shell that encapsulates the mRNA strands so they can gain access to cellular cytoplasm. That stabilizer can cause an allergic reaction in rare cases (about 1 in 90,000 for Pfizer and 1 in 400,000 in Moderna). It’s likely they’ll make some adjustments in that for future products as that’s not as good as the typical rate you might like to see of <1 per 1,000,000 for a major side effect.
If you carry an EpiPen with you everywhere you go, I’d look to either J&J or Novavax (when it’s authorized in a month or two) for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Tallying votes about an issue is not scientific.
They need to STFU talking about the virus, because, if we’ve learned ANYTHING in the past year, is that when ‘experts’ are studying ‘gun violence’, as they were for the past 30 years, they aren’t doing jack to understand or prepare for a real* virus.
They are absolute CLUELESS in this area and they might as well find other jobs.
*I realize that many will argue with the term ‘real’, but that’s beside the point as it’s certainly quite ‘real’ to all those whose lives have been turned upside down due to what the virus has been perceived as, at least to blue-state governors and judges.
