WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Earlier today, the South Dakota House of Representatives by an overwhelming vote of 67 -- 2 soundly rejected Governor Noem's "style and form" veto of HB 1217, the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem quickly responded today by again refusing to sign HB 1217, effectively killing the bill. Despite Governor Noem's veto of this bill and refusal to take a strong stand for women's sports, the House's nearly unanimous vote is a strong rebuke of the NCAA and the tentacles of Big Business that pressured Governor Noem to retreat from her earlier support of the bill in the first place.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said:
"The South Dakota House of Representatives today soundly rejected Governor Noem's 'style and form' veto of the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem had another opportunity to sign this bill and stand with the citizens of South Dakota and the legislature. Instead she failed to listen to South Dakotans and is siding with big business, the NCAA, and the rest of the woke mob on the Left.
"Far from standing alone as Governor Noem has suggested, signing HB 1217 would have put South Dakota in the company of Idaho, Mississippi, and Arkansas, which have already enacted similar bills into law, with other states poised to follow.
"Despite Governor Noem's refusal to stand up for common sense, Family Research Council will continue to support efforts in other states pushing back against destructive gender ideologies that threaten our young people, our families, and our freedom," concluded Perkins.
“””With those numbers why can’t they override her veto?”””
Even though the SD Senate is 32 Republicans to 3 Democrats, far too many of the SD State Senators are RINOS!!!!!!!
Any bill that actually means anything will be attacked by leftist activists and judges, so trying to write something that both accomplishes the job and isn’t challenged in court is impossible. Don’t fall for that argument. The legal community is all in on the tranny train. Time will tell if the current SCOTUS is too.
This is what Noem is supporting

The undersigned agree that Title IX needs to be protected, and we commit to working together to keep fairness in women’s sports.
We believe:
1) Only girls should play girls’ sports. Title IX was passed to protect fairness for women.
2) The federal government should enforce Title IX in a way that protects fairness for women’s sports, rather than misusing it in a way that undermines fairness.
3) The NCAA and other athletic sanctioning bodies should not take any adverse action against any state or school that acts to protect fairness for women.
It seems it's similar to the South Carolina Gov reaction which is to not change coed sports. I don't have an issue with that.
“Even though the SD Senate is 32 Republicans to 3 Democrats, far too many of the SD State Senators are RINOS!!!!!!!”
Perhaps they’ll be a bit less RINO if they knew what the base thought of this stunt, perhaps we help them...and be helping Kristi at the same time, since she claims to want to work with other states on this issue, and other states have now signed this legislation into law.
See "standing strong on principle." Doesn't matter which version of the bill Noem had signed, the Left would have sued her. Because she already has a bullseye on her for being an outspoken Republican conservative.
She simply folded and made the Left's job that much easier. Sign the bill and deal with whatever legal problems had come later. TX and FL would have joined in and the NCAA would have backed down.
I listened to her interview with Dan Bongino. I don’t know much about the subject but it sounded pretty logical to me. But the Republicans that we are, we’re willing to win the battle but lose the war. She was looking ahead . She’s proved she’s one freedom loving governor. I’d hate to lose her over semantics.
That's simply a CYA. There's no strength of law behind it. It's the equivalent of supporting Right to Life after you vetoed a pro-life bill.

...and it didn’t exist until a day before she rejected the bill:

If one thinks her heart is with the cause, that would be quite a stretch.
I don’t have a real firm grasp of the situation but I’m leaning the same way.
She seemed solid enough, I’ll see how it plays out.
No, just extremely extremely disappointed in her!!!! She just snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!! What a stooge move!
Just so you know, PDJT is still my guy!!!!!!
Sioux Falls has a lot of credit card companies.
Finance is the stable/growth industry of SD.
They stated they would pull out, leaving Sioux Falls a ghost town if she signed.
So she caved.
Republicans have no principles in the end.
I do hope she gets sued when a girl gets seriously injured by a boy in a dress. Of course, the pesky sovereign immunity will protect her.
So be it. If a woman governor can’t be bothered to protect women’s sport, then who am I to do it.
Because only a woman will be able to do anything about it. Any man will be destroyed for trying to.
Maybe it’s “so difficult to understand” because people see it differently than you.
Agreed. I would think there are two sides to this story. I don’t care enough to know either of them though.
If that is a fact and she brings this about I will apologize on this forum. Look, many of us had high expectations of Mike Pence, but as governor it appears he really let Conservatives down. That one still stings.
I can surely understand that, Obadiah. Pence proved to be a deep disappointment, for sure.
This is why the R’s are the party of stupid. They just kill themselves with unforced errors.
Most of our elected officials at some point cannot resist the temptation to try to be loved by the left.
I watched the interview. I heard her reasons. You considered them.
She killed this. She chose to kill it even though there are at least 3 other states that did something similar.
She can try to explain away all she wants. She listened to the squishy pukes that didn’t want her to sign it and she is trying to defend her decision. She has nothing to stand on. Nothing.
Political suicide is not a pretty event.
