I think it is called, “counsel of the circle of the neocons”, who were surrounding him. Manipulation, coercion, and lies. After all, he was a bit of a political newbie...God save us all.
Ask Pence.
I have often wondered the same thing.
I figured it was something a swamp dweller like Mitch McConnell may have issued a threat to Trump about.
“If you replace Wray, in spite of my asking you to leave him there, The Senate is very likely going to start an investigation of .....(Javanka?) about the ....(Jared’s business dealings in Israel?) I do not know. I only guess.
I am sure Trump saw how shabby an FBI Leader Wray turned out to be. What else but an applied threat of action would have prevented the change? Donald Trump is quite capable of keeping a secret when he wants to. We may never know the answer.
He trusted advisors who had other agendas, but it's hard to know until they show their cards.
I, and almost everybody here, thought Bill Barr was going to strangle the deep state. Instead, he gave them a neck massage and a complimentary reach-around.
Jeff Sessions Flashback...
In a statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday called Wray “an extraordinary person” with “outstanding accomplishments and a proven record of public service.” He lauded Wray’s past work as a U.S. attorney and his service at the Justice Department, especially in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when Wray was the principal associate deputy attorney general.
“Chris combines a brilliant legal mind, outstanding accomplishments, and a proven record of public service. We are fortunate that he is willing to make this personal commitment to serve his country at this important time,” Sessions said in a statement. “The President asked us to look for an FBI Director who has integrity, who understands and is committed to the rule of law, and who is dedicated to protecting the American people from crime, gangs, and terrorists. We have found our man in Chris Wray.”

Regards,
I think many conservatives like myself had no idea how pervasive the corruption had become because it was silent and covered by the media and the DOJ. It’s at a point where one great President can’t do it alone. He needs people who will fight the swamp alongside him. We need to be as determined to save the country as the Left is determined to destroy it.
He was recommended to Trump by Chris Christie. Incredibly unfortunate as trump was too trusting.
Not sure, But I heard Chris Christy made the recommendation.
Pretty sure it was Chris Christy.
Chris Christy recommended Wray for FBI director.
The only people who understand the levers of power are members of the swamp.
You have two options, put a a member of the swamp that cocaine mitch will approve, or collaspe the entire organization
One factor is that there are not a lot of decent, capable people applying for Swamp jobs. President Trump was often picking the best of the worst.
He probably had to dump Comey and Peking Mitch McConnell pressured him to replace Comey with Wray. McConnell was the key guy who controlled approval of appointees.
McConnell probably pushed the two traitors Comey Barrett and Kavenaugh and a lot of other appointees. He and old guard RINOs like Grassley, Graham et al.
I heard that the first thing McConnell said to Trump after the 2016 election is, “I don’t want to hear anything more about “draining the swamp”. I’m betting that Wray was McConnell’s suggestion simply because he was a guardian of the swamp creatures.
Trump’s main failure was people selection. This surprises me, I thought that would be his strong suit.
Trump was not a seasoned DC inhabitant when he took office, so I will give him a pass when he took the advice of others and made a mistake when he appointed Wray. The part that I do not understand is why, after becoming aware of the glaring error with Wray, he did not immediately fire him. Trump could have fired Wray for the manner in which the arrest of Roger Stone was handled. Trump could have fired Wray simply because he failed to manage the FBI in a cost saving way. Sending the resources to Stone’s house the was Wray allowed should have cost him his job due to waste alone. Who could have argued with that decision?
A question for the ages.
Personally, I would have fired everyone who was a major officer at the DOJ & FBI and many of their deputies. They both had developed cultures where THEY were the law, and a law unto themselves. It is not the worst part of the swamp, but is has greater domestic affect than the military or intelligence branches, usually.
I do believe in term limits, not for Congress but for bureaucrats, across all federal agencies. THAT - lifetime federal bureaucrats - is, by size, the largest swamp of all.
