Crews were dredging the river. Instead of muck, they pulled up three cannons and a mystery[Savannah River]

Dredging the Savannah River is like a box of chocolates, say those who head up the task.

You never know what you're gonna find.

How about three cannons that may date to the American Revolution, an anchor and a likely piece of ship's timber?

The Army Corps of Engineers halted work in the vicinity after the late February discovery east of the Georgia city's famous River Street. Then it sent out feelers to maritime experts, historians and those who have worked on wreck sites in the river, asking for their insight into the finds.

Perhaps the cannons were tossed overboard or they served as ballast. Maybe the old artillery pieces are related to a Civil War ironclad, which was scuttled by its Confederate crew. The Corps doubts that theory.

I know FReepers have boating accidents, but this is on another level.

British warship which was scourge of the American Revolution 'found' after 250 years

I've walked the cobblestones of River Street many times, played gigs in the expensive hotels there. Played the Savannah Jazz Festival on a stage where, just to my right, was a 15-20 foot drop into the river.

I wouldn't be surprised if they find some musical instruments down there. (Not mine)

A little Naval Jelly and a thorough bore-brushing, and it’s good as new!

Yea the NE Libs found it. Back in the early 70s I was loaned up there for a while, from Bell in Mia pure old southern paradise. Then the the Sub base at St Marys and NE taxes and end of paradise.
Ferried a boat through there and tied up for repairs in 91 and it was still OK. Nothing going out to I95. Now I hear its sprawl.

When I saw “three cannons” I thought they meant cameras. Then I remembered that the cameras are spelled “Canon.”

Thanks M Kehoe, and a fool in paradise, for the pings. Seems like a good time to do the weekly Digest ping, then I'm going to bed.
